1. A system configured to control use of a mobile device in a vehicle, the mobile device comprising a hands-on user interface and a wireless communication interface, the system comprising:
- a hardwired connection configured to couple the mobile device to the system through an integral wired coupler of the mobile device, wherein the hands-on interface of the mobile device is inaccessible with the mobile device coupled to the hardwired connection and the wireless communication interface of the mobile device remains operational with the mobile device coupled to the hardwired connection; and
a navigation system comprising a global positioning sensor and a controller configured to couple to the mobile device through the hardwired connection, the controller configured to allow operation of the vehicle with the mobile device coupled to the hardwired connection via authentication of the mobile device through the hardwired connection and to prevent a vehicle start when the mobile device is not coupled to the controller through the hardwired connection, wherein the controller is configured to permit, once the vehicle is started, a continued operation of the vehicle following removal of the mobile device from the hardwired connection, wherein the navigation system is configured to receive input from a user at a remote site from the vehicle during operation of the vehicle and send vehicle information to the user at the remote site from the vehicle during operation of the vehicle.

Abstract
A system controls use of a mobile device in a vehicle where the mobile device includes, a hands-on user interface and a wireless communication interface. The system includes a docking station that couples to the mobile device using a hardwired connection, and a controller that couples to the docking station and a vehicle-start system. The hands-on interface is inaccessible with the mobile device received in the docking station. The system allows operation of the vehicle with the mobile device coupled to the docking station via the hardwired connection and prevents a vehicle start when the mobile device is not coupled to the docking station. The wireless communication interface is operational with the mobile device coupled to the docking station via the hardwired connection, and the controller permits, once the vehicle is started, a continued operation of the vehicle following removal of the mobile device from the docking station.

13. A method of controlling use of a mobile device in a vehicle, the vehicle comprising a hard-wired connection configured to couple to the mobile device, the mobile device comprising a hands-on interface and a wireless communication interface, the method comprising:

coupling the mobile device to the hardwired connection through an integral wired coupler of the mobile device, the coupling of the mobile device further providing electrically coupling to a processor of a navigation system comprising a global positioning sensor, the processor configured to allow and prevent starting of the vehicle, wherein the processor is configured to authenticate the mobile device through the hardwired connection when the mobile device is coupled to the navigation system through the integral wired coupler of the mobile device, wherein the hands-on interface of the mobile device is inaccessible with the mobile device coupled to the hardwired connection and the wireless communication interface of the mobile device remains operational with the mobile device coupled to the hardwired connection; if the mobile device coupled to the hardwired connection is an authorized mobile device; then the processor allows the vehicle to start; and if the mobile device coupled to the hardwired connection is an unauthorized mobile device; then the processor prevents the vehicle from starting; and wherein the processor is configured to permit, once the vehicle is started, a continued operation of the vehicle following an uncoupling of the mobile device from the hardwired connection, wherein the navigation system is configured to receive input from a user at a remote site from the vehicle during operation of the vehicle and send vehicle information to the user at the remote site from the vehicle during operation of the vehicle. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25)
