Abstract

The invention relates to an ejector unit, in particular for a road milling machine, having an ejector that is replaceably mounted on a carrier. In one aspect the ejector is curved in a scoop-like fashion. In another aspect the ejector is reversible upon the carrier to allow the ejector to be reversed after one wear surface is worn, thus presenting a new second wear surface.

Claims

1. An ejector for a road milling machine, comprising:

an ejector body having a length and a width, the length being greater than the width, the body having a front conveying side and a rear mounting side;

a lengthwise extending mounting extension protruding from the rear mounting side, the ejector body being symmetrical about a lengthwise center line of the mounting extension in a widthwise direction, and the mounting extension having a mounting extension width less than the width of the ejector body, so that the ejector body can be reversibly mounted in either of two mounting positions rotated 180°

from each other about a rotational axis extending through the front conveying side and the rear mounting side; and

at least one mounting hole defined through the ejector body between the front conveying side and the rear mounting side and extending through the mounting extension.

2. The ejector of claim 1, wherein the rotational axis is normal to the rear mounting side.

3. The ejector of claim 1, wherein the rotational axis is normal to the front conveying side.

4. The ejector of claim 1, wherein:

an axis of the mounting hole lies on the lengthwise center line of the mounting extension.

5. The ejector of claim 4, wherein:

the rotational axis is parallel to the axis of the mounting hole.

6. The ejector of claim 1, wherein:

the at least one mounting hole includes first and second lengthwise spaced mounting holes.

7. The ejector of claim 6, wherein each mounting hole has an axis and the rotational axis is parallel to the axes of the mounting holes.

8. The ejector of claim 6, wherein each mounting hole has an axis and the axes of the mounting holes lie on the lengthwise center line of the mounting extension.

9. The ejector of claim 1, wherein:

the front conveying side has defined therein a lengthwise extending recess, thereby defining first and second lengthwise extending forward facing conveying surfaces adjacent lengthwise edges of the front conveying side.

10. An ejector for a road milling machine, comprising:

an ejector body having a length and a width, the length being greater than the width, the body having a front conveying side and a rear mounting side; and

a lengthwise extending mounting extension protruding from the rear mounting side, the ejector body being symmetrical about a lengthwise center line of the mounting extension in a widthwise direction, and the mounting extension having a mounting extension width less than the width of the ejector body, so that the ejector body can be reversibly mounted in either of two mounting positions rotated 180°

from each other about a rotational axis extending through the front conveying side and the rear mounting side;

wherein the front conveying side has defined therein a lengthwise extending recess, thereby defining first and second lengthwise extending forward facing conveying surfaces adjacent lengthwise edges of the front conveying side; and

wherein each of the forward facing conveying surfaces has at least one depression defined therein, so that debris can pack into the depressions during use to create an abrasion resistant debris layer on the front conveying side.

11. An ejector for a road milling machine, comprising:

an ejector body having a length and a width, the length being greater than the width, the body having a front conveying side and a rear mounting side;

a lengthwise extending mounting extension protruding from the rear mounting side, the ejector body being symmetrical about a lengthwise center line of the mounting extension in a widthwise direction, and the mounting extension having a mounting extension width less than the width of the ejector body, so that the ejector body can be reversibly mounted in either of two mounting positions rotated 180°

from each other about a rotational axis extending through the front conveying side and the rear mounting side; and

at least one mounting hole defined through the ejector body between the front conveying side and the rear mounting side and extending through the mounting extension;

wherein the front conveying side has defined therein a lengthwise extending recess, thereby defining first and second lengthwise extending forward facing conveying surfaces adjacent lengthwise edges of the front conveying side; and

wherein the at least one mounting hole communicates with the recess of the front conveying side.

12. The ejector of claim 11, wherein:

the at least one mounting hole includes first and second lengthwise spaced mounting holes.

13. The ejector of claim 11, wherein:

the ejector has at least one polygonal shape fastener head receptacle defined in the recess and communicated with the at least one mounting hole.

14. The ejector of claim 11, wherein:

the first and second conveying surfaces face generally parallel to an axis of the at least one mounting hole.

15. An ejector for a road milling machine, comprising:

an ejector body having a length and a width, the length being greater than the width, the body having a front conveying side and a rear mounting side, the front conveying side having defined therein a lengthwise extending recess, thereby defining first and second lengthwise extending forward facing conveying surfaces adjacent lengthwise edges of the front conveying side; and

first and second lengthwise spaced mounting holes defined through the ejector body between the front conveying side and the rear mounting side, the ejector body being symmetrical about the mounting holes in a widthwise direction so that the ejector body can be reversibly mounted in either of two mounting positions rotated 180°

from each other about a rotational axis normal to the rear mounting side.

16. The ejector of claim 15, wherein axes of the mounting holes lie on a lengthwise center line of the ejector body.

17. The ejector of claim 15, wherein:

each of the forward facing conveying surfaces has at least one depression defined therein, so that debris can pack into the depressions during use to create an abrasion resistant debris layer on the front conveying side.

18. The ejector of claim 15, wherein:

the first and second mounting holes communicate with the recess of the front conveying side.

19. The ejector of claim 18, wherein:

the ejector body has first and second polygonal shape fastener head receptacles defined in the recess and communicated with the first and second mounting holes, respectively.

20. The ejector of claim 15, wherein:

the first and second conveying surfaces face generally parallel to axes of the mounting holes.

21. An ejector unit for a road milling machine, the milling machine including a milling drum rotatable in a feed direction about a rotational axis, the rotational axis defining an axial direction parallel to the axis and a radial direction extending radially from the axis, the ejector unit comprising:

a carrier including a mounting foot shaped to be received on the milling drum, and a support portion extending from the mounting foot, the support portion including a forward facing support surface and a supporting shoulder protruding from the support surface; and

an ejector including a forward facing conveying surface and including a rear mounting side engaging the support portion, the ejector being received against the supporting shoulder of the carrier, so that engagement of the ejector with the supporting shoulder supports the ejector against radial motion relative to the carrier; and

wherein the carrier and ejector each include at least two bolt holes extending through the support portion of the carrier and the ejector, the bolt holes through the ejector extending through the forward facing conveying surface and the rear mounting side.

22. The ejector unit of claim 21, wherein:

the ejector includes a rearward extending extension, the extension being received against the supporting shoulder of the carrier.

23. The ejector unit of claim 22, wherein:

the extension of the ejector extends across the ejector generally parallel to the axial direction.

24. The ejector unit of claim 22, wherein:

the conveying surface of the ejector includes a recess located oppositely from the extension and extending across the ejector generally parallel to the axial direction.

25. The ejector unit of claim 22, wherein:

the ejector is symmetrical about the extension in the radial direction, so that a mounting position of the ejector on the carrier is reversible between at least two positions.

26. The ejector unit of claim 21, wherein:

the support portion of the carrier extends relative to the mounting foot such that the carrier supports the ejector at a negative angle in the range of from about −

5 degrees to about −

20 degrees relative to a radius of the milling drum.

27. The ejector unit of claim 21, wherein:

the mounting foot of the carrier is wider than the support portion of the carrier parallel to the feed direction.

28. The ejector unit of claim 21, wherein:

the ejector comprises a plurality of depressions defined in the conveying surface, so that debris can pack into the depressions during use.

29. The ejector unit of claim 21, wherein axes of the bolt holes lie on a lengthwise center line of the ejector body, the lengthwise centerline being parallel to the rotational axis of the milling drum.

30. An ejector unit for a road milling machine, comprising:

a carrier configured to be mounted on a milling drum;

an ejector replaceably mountable upon the carrier in at least two operating positions;

wherein the ejector and the carrier define a mechanical interface therebetween enabling reversible installation of the ejector on the carrier, the mechanical interface including;

a radially outwardly facing support surface defined on the carrier; and

a rearward extending extension extending from the ejector and received against the support surface of the carrier, so that engagement of the extension with the support surface supports the ejector against radially inward motion relative to the carrier; and

at least two bolts connecting the ejector to the carrier and providing the only support of the ejector against radially outward motion relative to the carrier.

31. The ejector unit of claim 30, wherein:

the ejector is symmetrical about the extension in a radial direction.

32. The ejector unit of claim 30, wherein:

the carrier includes a mounting foot and a support portion extending from the mounting foot, the support portion of the carrier extending relative to the mounting foot such that the carrier supports the ejector at a negative angle in the range of from about −

5 degrees to about −

20 degrees relative to a radius of the milling drum.

33. The ejector unit of claim 32, wherein:

the mounting foot of the carrier is wider than the support portion of the carrier parallel to a feed direction.

34. An ejector for a road milling machine, comprising:

an ejector body having a length and a width, the length being greater than the width, the body having a front conveying side and a rear mounting side, the ejector body having a lengthwise center line;

first and second mounting extensions protruding from the rear mounting side along the lengthwise center line, the mounting extensions each being symmetrical about the lengthwise center line of the ejector body; and

at least one mounting hole defined through the ejector body between the front conveying side and the rear mounting side.

35. The ejector of claim 34, wherein:

the first and second mounting extensions are separated by a widthwise extending rib protruding from the rear mounting side.

36. The ejector of claim 34, wherein:

each of the mounting extensions includes a pair of oppositely facing support surfaces on opposite sides of the lengthwise center line.

37. The ejector of claim 34, wherein:

the support surfaces of the first mounting extension are spaced lengthwise from the support surfaces of the second mounting extension.

38. The ejector of claim 34, wherein:

the at least one mounting hole includes first and second lengthwise spaced mounting holes extending through the first and second mounting extensions, respectively.

39. The ejector of claim 38, wherein

the mounting holes are each centered on the lengthwise center line.
