Abstract

A network gateway is configured to facilitate on line and off line bi-directional communication between a number of near end data and telephony devices with far end data termination devices via a hybrid fiber coaxial network and a cable modem termination system. The described network gateway combines a QAM receiver, a transmitter, a DOCSIS MAC, a CPU, a voice and audio processor, a voice synchronizer, an Ethernet MAC, and a USB controller to provide high performance and robust operation.

Claims

1. A media terminal adapter for supporting bidirectional exchange of packetized voice or voice data over a hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network, the media terminal adapter including a digital device configured to provide:

a subscriber-side interface adapted to couple to a subscriber telephony device;

a network-side interface adapted to couple to a cable modem;

a host application programming interface (HAPI) that includes a software messaging interface to a voice and data digital signal processor (DSP);

a voice over home network (VOHN) interface that includes a software messaging interface to a remote home phone network alliance (HPNA) media adapter; and

a gateway control protocol (GCP) interface adapted to communicate with a GCP logic module, wherein the GCP interface is configured to support signaling and encapsulation elements of a public switched telephone network (PSTN).

2. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, further comprising:

a security interface adapted to communicate with a security logic module, wherein the security interface is adapted to support a provisioning of encryption of media streams and signal messages.

3. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the digital device further includes:

a provisioning logic module configured to support a receipt of an assigned IP address that is generated by an external dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) server.

4. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the media terminal adapter is PacketCable compliant.

5. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the cable modem is Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) compliant.

6. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the provisioning interface is further adapted to support a receipt of downloaded configuration files for the media terminal adapter from a TFTP server or an HTTP server.

7. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the GCP interface is further adapted to:

communicate with a call management server (CMS) to reserve of quality of service (QoS) resources and to support generation and termination call signaling associated with the subscriber telephony device.

8. The media terminal adapter of claim 7, wherein the GCP interface is further adapted to:

communicate device events with the CMS, wherein the device events include one or more of the subscriber telephony device going off hook, and an entry of dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) digits at the subscriber telephony device.

9. The media terminal adapter of claim 7, wherein the GCP interface is further adapted to:

activate a media connection with a far-end media terminal adapter; and

support sending and receiving media stream packets upon detection of a call answer at a far end by the CMS.

10. The media terminal adapter of claim 7, wherein the GCP interface is further adapted to:

support receipt of connection messages from the GCP logic module; and

support forwarding connection controls to the voice and data processor via the HAPI interface or to the remote HPNA media adapter via the VOHN interface.

11. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the digital device further includes:

channel associated signaling (CAS) logic configured to interface with a subscriber line interface circuit via a general purpose input/output (GPIO) interface.

12. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the digital device includes:

device provisioning logic configured to communicate initialization, authentication, registration services and subscriber services over the HIT network.

13. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, further including:

device provisioning logic configured to exchange device information and endpoint information with an external provisioning server using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) logic.

14. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the network-side interface includes:

a Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) service interface adapted to communicate with a DOCSIS service logic module to thereby communicate with the cable modem.

15. The media terminal adapter of claim 14, wherein the DOCSIS service interface includes:

a control sub-interface configured to manage DOCSIS service flows and associated quality of service (QoS) traffic parameters and classification rules.

16. The media terminal adapter of claim 14, wherein the DOCSIS service interface includes:

a synchronization sub-interface configured to synchronize packet and scheduling prioritization for minimization of latency and jitter with guaranteed minimum constant bit rate scheduling.

17. The media terminal adapter of claim 14, wherein the DOCSIS service interface includes:

a bandwidth sub-interface configured to request bandwidth and quality of service (QoS) resources related to bandwidth.

18. The media terminal adapter of claim 14, wherein the DOCSIS service interface includes:

a transmit sub-interface configured to process packets in a media stream and perform per-packet quality of service (QoS) processing.

19. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the digital device includes a MIPS core.

20. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the digital device is further configured to:

implement a voice compression and a voice decompression algorithm to minimize end-to-end delay and jitter in the bidirectional exchange of the packetized voice or voice data.

21. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the HAPI facilitates issuing of commands from a MIPS core host to the voice and data DSP, and facilitates sending of events from the voice and data DSP to the MIPS core host.

22. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the HAPI is scalable to support at least one of multiple channels or multiple DSPs.

23. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the HAPI is configured to allow a multi-threading capability to support multiple channels.

24. The media terminal adapter of claim 1, further including:

a real time transport protocol (RTP) logic device coupled to the digital device, the RTP logic device being configured to convert an RTP packet into a second packet having a protocol independent format, the RTP packet and the second packet each having a header and a payload, wherein the payload of the RTP packet and the payload of the second packet are identical.
