NOTCH inhibition in the treatment of cardiovascular disease
First Claim
1. A method of treating a patient for atherosclerosis, comprising administering, systemically or locally, to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of an antibody that binds to Delta like 4 ligand (Dll4) and thereby inhibits the binding of Dll4 to NOTCH receptors.

Abstract
The present invention is directed to methods of treating or preventing atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases by administering agents that inhibit or modulate the NOTCH signaling pathway. In addition, the invention encompasses methods for assaying compounds for their ability to treat atherosclerosis based upon their effects on NOTCH signaling, and for measuring levels of amount, function, or activity of NOTCH pathway components in biological samples.

- 1. A method of treating a patient for atherosclerosis, comprising administering, systemically or locally, to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of an antibody that binds to Delta like 4 ligand (Dll4) and thereby inhibits the binding of Dll4 to NOTCH receptors.
- 6. A method of treating a patient for atherosclerosis, comprising administering, systemically or locally, to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of an antibody that binds to Delta like 4 ligand (Dll4) and thereby inhibits the binding of Dll4 to NOTCH receptors, wherein said patient is selected for treatment because one or more assays have indicated that NOTCH activity is elevated in said patient relative to a control group.
- 12. A method of treating a patient for atherosclerosis, comprising administering, systemically or locally, to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of a blocking antibody that binds to Delta like 4 ligand (Dll4) and thereby inhibits the binding of Dll4 to macrophages, wherein said patient is selected for treatment because, relative to a control group, said patient has a greater amount of NOTCH activity in proinflammatory cells.
