Abstract

Array antennas for wireless transmission having an array of emitters/receivers that are compactly arranged above an antenna feed and ground plate. These high gain devices may be configured to operate in any appropriate band, such as the 5.15 to 5.85 GHz band and/or the 2.40-2.48 GHz band. The antenna emitters are arranged in a separate plane (or planes) above an antenna feed connecting the emitting elements to the radio circuitry. The antenna feed is positioned between the emitters and a ground plane. The antenna array may be configured to operate with both horizontal and vertical polarization. The apparatuses may be configured for low impedance mismatch and may have a high gain relative to a very small and compact overall shape.

Claims

1. An array antenna comprising:

a ground plate in a first plane;

a plurality of antenna radiating elements above the first plane wherein each antenna radiating element has a radiating surface extending in a plane above the first plane, wherein the antenna radiating elements may extend in the same plane or in different planes;

a third plane between the first plane and the radiating surfaces; and

a plurality of feed lines, wherein each feed line extends in the third plane between two or more of the antenna radiating elements to connect the two or more antenna radiating elements to each other, so that the plurality of radiating elements form a network that is fed by a common connection point;

wherein the plurality of antenna radiating elements and the plurality of feed lines are part of a single continuous sheet of metal in which two or more edges of each antenna radiating element are connected through two or more slant feed lines to the plurality of feed lines in the third plane, further wherein the width of the slant feed lines narrows from the antenna radiating element to the plurality of feed lines.

2. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein the radiating surfaces of each antenna radiating element of the plurality of antenna radiating elements extend in a second plane above the first plane.

3. The array antenna of claim 2, wherein the first plane and the second plane are separated by between about 2 and about 20 mm.

4. The array antenna of claim 2, wherein the first plane is separated from the third plane by between about 1 and about 10 mm, and wherein the second plane is separate from the third plane by between about 1 and about 10 mm.

The array antenna of claim 1, wherein a surface area of the radiating surface of at least some of the antenna radiating elements in the plurality of antenna radiating elements vary relative to each other by within about 20.0% of an average surface area of the radiating surfaces in the plurality of antenna radiating elements.

6. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein at least some of the antenna radiating elements in the plurality of antenna radiating elements have different shapes and surface areas.

The array antenna of claim 1, wherein a surface area of the radiating surface of at least some of the antenna radiating elements in the plurality of antenna radiating elements vary relative to each other by between about 0.1% and 20.0% of an average surface area of the radiating surfaces in the plurality of antenna radiating elements.

The array antenna of claim 1, further wherein the radiating surfaces of the plurality of antenna radiating elements have different surface areas that vary from each other by between about 0.1% and 10.0% of an average surface area of the radiating surfaces in the plurality of antenna radiating elements.

9. The array antenna of claim 1, further wherein the plurality of antenna radiating elements have a plurality of radiating surfaces of different surface areas that vary from each other by between about 0.1% and 5.0%.

10. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein the plurality of feed lines comprises a plurality of antenna feed regions that each have a length and a width extending in the third plane, and wherein for at least some of the feed lines, the width varies along the length.

11. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein the plurality of feed lines comprises a plurality of antenna feed regions that each have a length and a width extending in the third plane, and wherein for at least half of the antenna feeds, the width varies along the length.

12. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein the plurality of feed lines connects to a vertical polarization feed connection point that is connected to a radio, and a horizontal polarization feed connection point that is connected the radio.

13. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein the plurality of antenna radiating elements the and plurality of feed lines are all formed of a single sheet of tin plated steel, brass, or copper.

14. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein the plurality of antenna radiating elements consists of four antenna radiating elements.

15. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein the plurality of antenna radiating elements consists of nine antenna radiating elements.

16. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein the antenna gain is between about 15 and about 20 dB.

17. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein the bandwidth of the antenna is between about 5.15 to 5.85 GHz.

18. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein the bandwidth of the antenna is between about 2.40 to 2.48 GHz.

19. The array antenna of claim 1, wherein the planes in which the ground plate, plurality of antenna radiating elements and antenna feed extend are separated from each other by air.

20. An array antenna comprising:

a ground plate in a first plane;

a plurality of antenna radiating elements extending in or above a second plane, wherein the second plane is above the first plane, and further wherein each antenna radiating element has a radiating surface extending parallel to the second plane;

a third plane between the first and second planes;

a vertical polarization connection point connected to a first radio and a horizontal polarization connection point connected to the first radio; and

a plurality of feed lines, wherein each feed line extends in the third plane between two or more of the antenna radiating elements to connect the two or more antenna radiating elements to each other, so that the plurality of antenna radiating elements forms a vertical polarization network that is fed by the vertical polarization connection point and a horizontal polarization network that is fed by the horizontal polarization connection point;

wherein the plurality of antenna radiating elements and the plurality of feed lines are part of a single continuous sheet of metal in which two or more edges of each antenna radiating element are connected through two or more slant feed lines to the plurality of feed lines in the third plane, further wherein the width of the slant feed lines narrows from the antenna radiating element to the plurality of feed lines.

21. The array antenna of claim 20, wherein the radiating surfaces of each antenna radiating element extend in the second plane.

22. The array antenna of claim 20, further wherein adjacent antenna radiating elements are separated from each other by less than one-half of a wavelength of radiation of the array antenna.

23. An array antenna comprising:

a ground plate in a first plane;

a plurality of antenna radiating elements each comprising a radiating surface, wherein the radiating surfaces extend in a second plane above the first plane;

a third plane between the first and second planes;

a vertical polarization connection point connected to a radio and a horizontal polarization connection point connected to the radio; and

a plurality of feed lines wherein each feed line extend in the third plane between two or more of the antenna radiating elements, to connect the two or more antenna radiating elements to each other; and

a plurality of slant feed lines wherein each slant feed line connects the edge of one antenna radiating element to a feed line of the plurality of feed lines; and

a plurality of ground connections wherein each ground connection connects one antenna radiating element to the ground plate at a position that is off-center relative to the radiating surface of the antenna radiating element;

wherein the plurality of antenna radiating elements and the plurality of feed lines are part of a single continuous sheet of metal in which two or more edges of each antenna radiating element are connected through two or more slant feed lines to the plurality of feed lines in the third plane, further wherein the width of the slant feed lines narrows from the antenna radiating element to the plurality of feed lines.
