wherein the guide is configured relative to the patient-specific surface to provide a predefined path for the surgical instrument that is aligned through a portion of tissue associated with the hip joint when the patient-specific surface is placed against and aligned with the corresponding acetabular surface; and

wherein the predefined path for the surgical instrument is configured to provide a predefined orientation of an acetabular implant when the patient-specific surface is placed against and aligned with the corresponding acetabular surface, wherein the shape of the corresponding acetabular surface of the hip joint and the predefined orientation of the acetabular implant are derived from the electronic image data of the hip joint.
