A process for preparing a substantially gel free non-dendrimer polyamide comprising primary amino groups, the process comprising the step of reacting Reagent A and Reagent B in a reaction mixture in the presence of at least 5.1% and less than 23.3% water by weight of a total amount of Reagents A and B sufficient to prevent gelation, whereinReagent A comprises at least one diaminoC1-12hydrocarbon;

  • andReagent B comprises at least one di(C1-12hydrocarbo-oxy) C3-10hydrocarbo-enedioate and/or anhydride thereof, whereinReagent A and Reagent B are present in an amount to provide a molar ratio Rt of Reagent A to Reagent B which is in a range of 1.1 to 2.9.
