Abstract

A fiber optic cable assembly includes a fiber optic cable and a fiber optic connector. The cable includes a jacket having an elongated transverse cross-sectional profile that defines a major axis and a minor axis. Strength components of the cable are anchored to the connector. The fiber optic connector includes a multi-fiber ferrule defining a major axis that is generally perpendicular to the major axis of the jacket and a minor axis that is generally perpendicular to the minor axis of the jacket. Certain types of connectors include a connector body defining a side opening that extends along a length of the connector body; a multi-fiber ferrule configured for lateral insertion into the connector body through the side opening; and a cover that mounts over the side opening after the multi-fiber ferrule has been inserted into the connector body through the side opening.

Claims

1. A fiber optic connector comprising:

a connector body having a length that extends along an axis of the connector body, the connector body including front and rear ends separated by the length of the connector body, the connector body also defining a side opening that extends along the length of the connector body;

a multi-fiber ferrule that mounts at the front end of the connector body, the side opening being arranged and configured for allowing the multi-fiber ferrule to be inserted laterally into the connector body through the side opening; and

a cover that mounts over the side opening after the multi-fiber ferrule has been inserted into the connector body through the side opening;

wherein the front end of the connector body is defined by a front end plate, wherein the front end plate defines a through-opening through which a portion of the multi-fiber ferrule extends.

2. The fiber optic connector of claim 1, wherein the through-opening has a transverse cross-sectional area that increases as the through opening extends along the axis of the connector body in a forward direction.

3. The fiber optic connector of claim 2, wherein the through-opening has a generally rectangular shape having opposing major sides and opposing minor sides.

4. The fiber optic connector of claim 3, wherein the major sides diverge from one another as the major sides extend in a forward direction.

5. The fiber optic connector of claim 4, wherein the minor sides diverge from one another as the minor sides extend in a forward direction.

6. The fiber optic connector of claim 5, wherein the major and minor sides are planar and are angled at oblique angles relative to the axis of the connector body.

7. The fiber optic connector of claim 1, wherein lateral access is provided along the length of the connector body from directly behind the front end plate to the rear end of the connector body.

8. A fiber optic connector comprising:

a connector body having a length that extends along an axis of the connector body, the connector body including front and rear ends separated by the length of the connector body, the connector body also defining a side opening that extends along the length of the connector body;

a multi-fiber ferrule that mounts at the front end of the connector body, the side opening being arranged and configured for allowing the multi-fiber ferrule to be inserted laterally into the connector body through the side opening; and

a cover that mounts over the side opening after the multi-fiber ferrule has been inserted into the connector body through the side opening;

wherein the rear end of the connector body is configured to receive and retain at least one strength member of a fiber optic cable.

9. The fiber optic connector of claim 8, further comprising a spring for biasing the multi-fiber ferrule in a forward direction, and wherein the cover includes a spring compression member that axially compresses the spring within the connector body when the cover is mounted to the connector body.

10. The fiber optic connector of claim 8, wherein the front end of the connector body is defined by a front end plate, wherein the front end plate defines a through-opening through which a portion of the multi-fiber ferrule extends.

11. The fiber optic connector of claim 10, wherein the through-opening has a transverse cross-sectional area that increases as the through opening extends along the axis of the connector body in a forward direction.

12. The fiber optic connector of claim 11, wherein the through-opening has a generally rectangular shape having opposing major sides and opposing minor sides.

13. The fiber optic connector of claim 12, wherein the major sides diverge from one another as the major sides extend in a forward direction.

14. The fiber optic connector of claim 13, wherein the minor sides diverge from one another as the minor sides extend in a forward direction.

15. The fiber optic connector of claim 14, wherein the major and minor sides are planar and are angled at oblique angles relative to the axis of the connector body.

16. The fiber optic connector of claim 10, wherein lateral access is provided along the length of the connector body from directly behind the front end plate to the rear end of the connector body.

17. The fiber optic connector of claim 8, wherein the side opening extends along the length of the connector body for at least 50 percent of the length of the connector body.

18. The fiber optic connector of claim 8, wherein the side opening extends along the length of the connector body for at least 75 percent of the length of the connector body.

19. The fiber optic connector of claim 8, wherein the multi-fiber ferrule has a width and a height, wherein the multi-fiber ferrule supports ends of a plurality of optical fibers in openings aligned along a line that extends along the width of the multi-fiber ferrule, and wherein the side opening has a cross-dimension that is smaller than the width of the multi-fiber ferrule.

20. The fiber optic connector of claim 8, wherein the rear end of the connector body is configured to receive and retain at least two strength members of the fiber optic cable.

21. The fiber optic connector of claim 20, wherein the fiber optic cable is a flat drop cable.

22. The fiber optic connector of claim 8, further comprising a plurality of optical fibers having end portions secured within the multi-fiber ferrule.

23. The fiber optic connector of claim 22, wherein the optical fibers are spliced to optical fibers of a fiber optic cable at a splice location, the splice location being positioned within the connector body.

24. The fiber optic connector of claim 23, wherein the optical fibers are ribbonized, and wherein the splice location is reinforced and protected by a re-coating layer provided over the splice location.

25. The fiber optic connector of claim 23, wherein the at least one strength member of the fiber optic cable is secured within a rear portion of the connector body.

26. The fiber optic connector of claim 22, wherein the optical fibers correspond to a fiber optic cable and wherein the multi-fiber ferrule is mounted directly on the optical fibers of the fiber optic cable without any intermediate splice.

27. The fiber optic connector of claim 26, wherein the at least one strength member of the fiber optic cable is secured within a rear portion of the connector body.

28. The fiber optic connector of claim 8, further comprising a metal reinforcing sleeve that mounts over a rear portion of the connector body.

29. The fiber optic connector of claim 28, further comprising an outermost sleeve that mounts over the metal reinforcing sleeve, the connector body and the outermost sleeve having a molded plastic construction.

30. The fiber optic connector of claim 29, wherein the metal reinforcing sleeve includes a main sleeve body and a lip that projects radially outwardly from the main sleeve body, wherein the lip has a rearwardly facing surface, and wherein the outermost sleeve includes an internal shoulder having a forwardly facing surface that abuts the rearwardly facing surface of the lip to limit rearward movement of the reinforcing sleeve relative to the outermost sleeve.

31. The fiber optic connector of claim 30, further comprising a front end piece that mounts at the front end of the connector body and connects to the outermost sleeve such that the outermost sleeve and the front end piece are secured in place relative to the connector body.

32. The fiber optic connector of claim 31, further comprising a fastener that mounts over the outermost sleeve for securing the fiber optic connector to a component selected from the group of:

1) another fiber optic connector; and

2) a fiber optic adapter.

33. The fiber optic connector of claim 32, wherein the fastener comprises a threaded nut.

34. The fiber optic connector of claim 33, further comprising an external seal mounted about the outermost sleeve.

35. The fiber optic connector of claim 8, wherein the side opening in the connector body provides access to a strength component receiving area configured to receive at least one strength component of an optical cable.

36. The fiber optic connector of claim 35, wherein the strength component receiving area is structured to receive the strength component laterally through the side opening.

37. The fiber optic connector of claim 36, wherein the cover closes the strength component receiving area when the cover mounts over the side opening of the connector body.

38. The fiber optic connector of claim 36, wherein the strength component is epoxied in place in the strength component receiving area.

39. A fiber optic connector comprising:

a connector body having a length that extends along an axis of the connector body, the connector body including front and rear ends separated by the length of the connector body, the connector body also defining a side opening that extends along the length of the connector body;

a multi-fiber ferrule that mounts at the front end of the connector body, the side opening being arranged and configured for allowing the multi-fiber ferrule to be inserted laterally into the connector body through the side opening;

a cover that mounts over the side opening after the multi-fiber ferrule has been inserted into the connector body through the side opening; and

a spring for biasing the multi-fiber ferrule in a forward direction, and wherein the cover includes a spring compression member that axially compresses the spring within the connector body when the cover is mounted to the connector body.

40. A fiber optic connector comprising:

a connector body having a length that extends along an axis of the connector body, the connector body including front and rear ends separated by the length of the connector body, the connector body also defining a side opening that extends along the length of the connector body;

a multi-fiber ferrule that mounts at the front end of the connector body, the side opening being arranged and configured for allowing the multi-fiber ferrule to be inserted laterally into the connector body through the side opening;

a cover that mounts over the side opening after the multi-fiber ferrule has been inserted into the connector body through the side opening; and

a plurality of optical fibers having end portions secured within the multi-fiber ferrule;

wherein the optical fibers are spliced to optical fibers of a fiber optic cable at a splice location, the splice location being positioned within the connector body.

41. The fiber optic connector of claim 40, wherein the optical fibers are ribbonized, and wherein the splice location is reinforced and protected by a re-coating layer provided over the splice location.

42. A fiber optic connector comprising:

a connector body having a length that extends along an axis of the connector body, the connector body including front and rear ends separated by the length of the connector body, the connector body also defining a side opening that extends along the length of the connector body;

a multi-fiber ferrule that mounts at the front end of the connector body, the side opening being arranged and configured for allowing the multi-fiber ferrule to be inserted laterally into the connector body through the side opening;

a cover that mounts over the side opening after the multi-fiber ferrule has been inserted into the connector body through the side opening;

a metal reinforcing sleeve that mounts over a rear portion of the connector body;

an outermost sleeve that mounts over the metal reinforcing sleeve, the connector body and the outermost sleeve having a molded plastic construction;

a front end piece that mounts at the front end of the connector body and connects to the outermost sleeve such that the outermost sleeve and the front end piece are secured in place relative to the connector body; and

a fastener that mounts over the outermost sleeve for securing the fiber optic connector to a component selected from the group of;

1) another fiber optic connector; and

2) a fiber optic adapter;

wherein the metal reinforcing sleeve includes a main sleeve body and a lip that projects radially outwardly from the main sleeve body, wherein the lip has a rearwardly facing surface, and wherein the outermost sleeve includes an internal shoulder having a forwardly facing surface that abuts the rearwardly facing surface of the lip to limit rearward movement of the reinforcing sleeve relative to the outermost sleeve.

43. The fiber optic connector of claim 42, wherein the fastener comprises a threaded nut.

44. The fiber optic connector of claim 43, further comprising an external seal mounted about the outermost sleeve.
