Abstract

The present invention provides systems, devices and related methods for applying electric fields for cancerous cell destruction and tissue ablation. A method can include advancing an ablation probe into a patient; deploying a guide from the delivery member along a guide tissue penetration path, deploying an electrode from the guide along an electrode tissue penetration path, and establishing current flow within the target tissue.

Claims

1. A method of delivering an electric field to a target tissue, the method comprising:

advancing a treatment probe comprising a delivery member into a patient;

advancing a guide through the lumen of the delivery member;

deploying and advancing the guide along a guide tissue penetration path;

deploying an electrode from the guide along an electrode tissue penetration path to define a treatment volume within the target tissue; and

establishing an alternating electrical current flow extending within the treatment volume of the patient using the deployed electrode, wherein the alternating electrical current flow provides a voltage field of less than 50 V/cm within the treatment volume and selectively destroys abnormally proliferating cells while leaving normal cells substantially intact within the treatment volume.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the delivery member has a long axis;

deploying the guide along the guide tissue penetration path directs advancement of the guide distally and away from the delivery member long axis; and

deploying the electrode from the guide along the electrode tissue penetration path directs advancement of the electrode distally and parallel to or toward the delivery member long axis.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the guide is deployed before the electrode is deployed.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising positioning a central electrode within the treatment volume, and wherein the alternating electrical current flow extends between the central electrode and the electrode.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein advancing the treatment probe comprises penetrating the target tissue with a distal end of the delivery member.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the alternating electrical current flow preferentially destroys cancerous cells within the treatment volume while leaving non-cancerous cells substantially intact within the treatment volume.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the alternating electrical current flow causes heating of the treatment volume.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

deploying a second guide through an opening in a sidewall of the delivery member;

deploying a second electrode from the second guide; and

establishing a second alternating electrical current flow extending within the treatment volume of the patient using the deployed second electrode, wherein the second alternating electrical current flow provides a voltage field of less than 50 V/cm within the treatment volume and selectively destroys abnormally proliferating cells while leaving normal cells substantially intact within the treatment volume.

The method of claim 8, further comprising positioning a central electrode within the treatment volume, and wherein the alternating electrical currently flow extends between the central electrode and the electrode, and wherein the second alternating electrical current flow extends between the central electrode and the second electrode.

10. A system for preferentially destroying cancerous cells in a treatment tissue volume, the system comprising:

a treatment probe comprising a delivery member having a long axis, a guide housed within the lumen of the delivery member and configured to be deployed from a sidewall opening of the delivery member and an electrode configured to be deployed from the guide along an electrode tissue penetration path so as to be penetrated into tissue and define a treatment volume within the treatment tissue volume; and

an energy source coupled with the electrode to establish an alternating electrical current flow that provides a voltage field of less than 50 V/cm within the treatment tissue volume and selectively destroys abnormally proliferating cells in the treatment tissue volume while leaving normal cells in the treatment tissue volume substantially intact.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein:

the delivery member has a long axis;

deployment of the guide from delivery member directs advancement of the guide distally and away from the delivery member long axis; and

deployment of the electrode from the guide directs advancement of the electrode distally and parallel to or toward the delivery member long axis.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein guide is configured to be penetrated into tissue.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the delivery member is configured to be penetrated into tissue.

14. The system of claim 10, wherein the treatment probe comprises a central electrode configured to be positioned within the treatment tissue volume, and wherein the alternating electrical current flow extends between the central electrode and the electrode.

15. The system of claim 10, wherein the alternating electrical current flow causes heating of tissue within the treatment tissue volume.

16. The system of claim 10, further comprising a control system operatively coupled to the energy source and the treatment probe, the control system comprising:

one or more processors; and

memory including instructions stored thereon that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the control system to provide, via at least the energy source and the electrode, the alternating electrical current flow within the treatment tissue volume.

17. The system of claim 16, further comprising a feedback unit for detecting a characteristic of tissue within the treatment tissue volume.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the characteristics comprises impedance or temperature.
