1. A method of performing peritoneal dialysis comprising:

  • passing a spent dialysis fluid from an individual through a dialyzer, a carbon source, a urease source and an electrodeionization unit to produce a clean dialysis fluid, the dialyzer comprising an ion-rejection membrane selected from the group consisting of a first ion-rejection membrane that allows the passage of negatively charged ions and non-ionic species but restricts the passage of positively charged ions, and a second ion-rejection membrane that allows the passage of positively charged ions and non-ionic species but restricts the passage of negatively charged ions; and

returning the clean dialysis fluid to the individual.
