Abstract

A digital image of the object is captured and the object is recognized from plurality of objects in a database. An information address corresponding to the object is then used to access information and initiate communication pertinent to the object.

Claims

1. An image matching engine comprising:

a network connection configured to receive image data from a mobile device over a network; and

at least one recognition server coupled with the network connection and configured to;

acquire the image data over the network connection;

derive image parameters from the image data;

recognize at least one target from a database of known images based on the image parameters; and

enable, via an address, pertinent information associated with the at least one target to be returned to the mobile device over the network connection.

2. The engine of claim 1, wherein the at least one recognition server comprises a parallel processing computer system.

3. The engine of claim 1, wherein the pertinent information enables an interaction between the mobile device and the at least one target.

4. The engine of claim 3, wherein the interaction comprises a transaction related to the at least one target.

5. The engine of claim 4, wherein the transaction relates to a purchase.

6. The engine of claim 5, wherein the transaction is associated with an account.

7. The engine of claim 6, wherein the account comprises at least one of the following:

a bank account, an on-line account, a credit card account, a user account, and a device account.

8. The engine of claim 3, wherein the interaction comprises an image search related to the at least one target.

9. The engine of claim 3, wherein the interaction comprises a selection of an option related to the at least one target.

10. The engine of claim 3, wherein the interaction comprises a real-time interaction.

11. The engine of claim 3, wherein the interaction comprises at least one of the following:

a game interaction, accessing a web site, accessing a software process, initiating a software process, initiating a call, initiating a radio communication, sending information to a web site, displaying information, and producing an audio signal.

12. The engine of claim 1, wherein the image data comprises compressed image data.

13. The engine of claim 12, wherein the compressed image data comprises a JPEG format.

14. The engine of claim 1, wherein the image data comprises video data.

15. The engine of claim 1, wherein the image data represents on-screen content.

16. The engine of claim 15, wherein the on-screen content represents television programming.

17. The engine of claim 1, wherein the image data comprises an input image.

18. The engine of claim 1, wherein the at least one target comprises multiple targets.

19. The engine of claim 1, wherein the at least one recognition server is further configured to search the database of known images for matches to the image data wherein the at least one target is representative of at least one of the matches.

20. The engine of claim 1, wherein the at least one recognition server is further configured to search the database of known images for a best match.

21. The engine of claim 1, wherein the pertinent information comprises the address.

22. The engine of claim 1, wherein the pertinent information comprises at least one of the following related to the at least one target:

an identify, a name, a number, a classification, a position, an orientation, a size, a color, a status, decoded information, an attribute, and text.

23. The engine of claim 1, wherein the pertinent information comprises content information associated with the at least one target.

24. The engine of claim 23, wherein the content information includes at least one of the following:

an image, a video, an animation, audio, a sound, a graphic, and a visual indication.

25. The engine of claim 1, wherein the at least one recognition server is configured to operate as a web service.

26. The engine of claim 1, wherein the network connection is further configured to communicate with the mobile device via a network protocol.

27. The engine of claim 26, wherein the network protocol comprises an HTTP protocol.

28. The engine of claim 26, wherein the network protocol comprises a cellular protocol.

29. The engine of claim 1, wherein the network connection couples with the Internet as the network.

30. The engine of claim 1, wherein the network connection couples with a cellular network as the network.

31. The engine of claim 1, wherein the at least one target comprises a target image.

32. The engine of claim 1, wherein the at least one target comprises a target object.

33. The engine of claim 32, wherein the target object comprises at least one of the following:

a face, a vehicle, a poster, a billboard, a building, a 2D object, a 3D object, a magazine, a newspaper, an iris, a vending machine, a beverage container, a point of sales device, a person, a passport, a driver'"'"'s license, and a machine part.

34. The engine of claim 1, further comprising the database of known images.

35. The engine of claim 34, wherein the database of known images includes images of different objects.

36. The engine of claim 34, wherein the database of known images includes multiple images of a single object.

37. The engine of claim 34, wherein the database of known images is configured to accommodate linking images to the pertinent information.

38. The engine of claim 1, wherein the image parameters comprise image characteristics.

39. The engine of claim 1, wherein the image parameters comprise descriptors.

40. The engine of claim 39, wherein the descriptors comprise invariant descriptors.

41. The engine of claim 40, wherein the invariant descriptors comprise local invariant descriptors.

42. The engine of claim 1, wherein the mobile device comprises at least one of a robot, a cell phone, a personal digital assistant, a digital camera, a handheld device, a security device, a mobile computing device, and a video camera.
