Abstract

A device for containing emboli within a left atrial appendage of a patient includes a frame that is expandable from a reduced cross section to an enlarged cross section and a slider assembly. There is provided in accordance with various embodiments of the present invention methods of preventing retention anchors from projecting outside of the native diameter of the frame, thus facilitating recapture of the device.

Claims

1. A method of deploying an implantable device within a medical patient, the method comprising:

delivering an implant comprising an expandable frame in a collapsed configuration to a desired location within the medical patient, the expandable frame including a plurality of supports and a plurality of tissue anchors; and

expanding the expandable frame from the collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration, wherein at least one support of the plurality of supports includes a bend and is attached to at least one tissue anchor of the plurality of tissue anchors, the bend being configured to cause the at least one tissue anchor to project radially inwardly relative to the at least one support when the frame is in the collapsed configuration.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the expandable frame is self-expanding.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the supports and tissue anchors define a planar axis when the expandable frame is in a collapsed configuration, and wherein expanding the expandable frame includes displacing the tissue anchors relative to the planar axis.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein each support defines a longitudinal axis and has a jogged portion comprising the bend, and wherein expanding the expandable frame includes angulating the jogged portion relative to the longitudinal axis.

5. The method of claim 1, further including positioning the expandable frame in at least one of an atrial appendage, a septal defect, a patent foramen ovale, and a patent ductus arteriosus.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein expanding the expandable frame includes bending each support at a bending region comprising the bend, each support having a first aspect ratio, the bending region of each support having a second aspect ratio, the first and second aspect ratios being different.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein twisting the plurality of tissue anchors includes manipulating a turbo element formed on each support comprising the bend.

8. A method of capturing an expandable frame disposed within a patient, the method comprising:

engaging an expandable frame disposed within a blood vessel, the expandable frame including a plurality of supports and tissue anchors extending from the supports and penetrating tissue; and

collapsing the expandable frame such that the tissue anchors twist inwardly relative to the supports and release the tissue, wherein at least one support of the plurality of supports includes a bend and is attached to at least one tissue anchor of the plurality of tissue anchors, the bend being configured to cause the at least one tissue anchor to project radially inwardly relative to the at least one support when the frame is in the collapsed configuration.

9. The method of claim 8, further including at least partially advancing a catheter over the expandable frame to withdraw the expandable frame from within the blood vessel.

10. The method of claim 9, further including withdrawing the expandable frame from within the patient while the expandable frame is positioned in a collapsed configuration within the catheter.

11. The method of claim 8, further including repositioning the expandable frame, while within the patient, after collapsing the expandable frame.

12. The method of claim 8, further including withdrawing the expandable frame from at least one of an atrial appendage, a septal defect, a patent foramen ovale, and a patent ductus arteriosus.

13. The method of claim 8, wherein each support defines a longitudinal axis and has a jogged portion comprising the bend and, and wherein collapsing the expandable frame includes angulating the jogged portion relative to the longitudinal axis.

14. The method of claim 8, wherein collapsing the expandable frame includes bending each support at a bending region comprising the bend, each support having a first aspect ratio, the bending region of each support having a second aspect ratio, the first and second aspect ratios being different.

15. The method of claim 8, wherein collapsing the expandable frame includes manipulating a turbo element formed on each support comprising the bend.

16. A method of capturing an expandable frame disposed within a patient the method, comprising:

collapsing the expandable frame from an expanded configuration to a collapsed configuration, the expandable frame defining a native diameter in the collapsed configuration, the expandable frame having a plurality of tissue anchors that extend outwardly from the expandable frame while the expandable frame is positioned in the expanded configuration;

moving the tissue anchors relative to the expandable frame downward into and below the native diameter of the expandable frame, wherein the expandable frame includes a bend, the bend being configured to allow movement of at least one tissue anchor downward and below the native diameter of the expandable frame; and

sliding the expandable frame into a lumen defined by a catheter to capture the expandable frame.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the expandable frame includes a plurality of supports, each support including a jogged portion comprising the bend, and wherein moving the plurality of tissue anchors includes angulating the jogged portion relative to a respective support.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein collapsing the expandable frame includes bending the expandable frame and comprising the bend at a bending region of the expandable frame, the expandable frame having a first aspect ratio, the bending region having a second aspect ratio, the first and second aspect ratios being different.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein moving the tissue anchors includes manipulating a turbo element of the expandable frame and comprising the bend relative to the tissue anchors.

20. The method of claim 16, further including withdrawing the expandable frame from at least one of an atrial appendage, a septal defect, a patent foramen ovale, and a patent ductus arteriosus.
