Abstract

Embodiments of devices and methods for vessel occlusion include an endoluminal occlusion device having a support structure forming at least two open loops with a crossover point between adjacent loops and free movement of the support structure at the crossover between adjacent loops, wherein the support structure is configured to extend along the walls of a lumen; and a first occlusive material attached to and across one of the at least two loops formed by the support structure, wherein the occlusive material is configured to occlude the flow of fluid within the lumen.

Claims

1. An endoluminal occlusion device, comprising:

a support structure forming at least two open loops with a crossover point between adjacent loops and free movement of the support structure at the crossover between adjacent loops, wherein the support structure is configured to extend along the walls of a lumen; and

a first occlusive material attached to and across one of the at least two loops formed by the support structure, wherein the occlusive material is configured to occlude the flow of fluid within the lumen.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the support structure comprises a first elongate member having a clockwise spiral configuration and a second elongate member having a counterclockwise spiral configuration.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the crossover point is formed by the intersection between the first elongate member and the second elongate member.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the support structure is formed from a single elongate member.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the occlusive material is made from a material type different from the material type used to make the support structure.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the occlusive material is made of a material selected from the group consisting of wool, silk and polymer.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the occlusive material is formed into a conical structure.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein the conical structure has a pointed apex.

9. The device of claim 7, wherein the conical structure has a truncated apex.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the occlusive material is a sheet.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the occlusive material is nonporous.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein the occlusive material is porous.

13. The device of claim 1, wherein the occlusive material has pores sized from 0.01 inches to 0.3 inches.

14. The device of claim 1, wherein the support structure has sufficient rigidity such that the support structure is configured to exert enough radial force after implantation within the lumen to trigger a systemic response from the lumen wall.

15. The device of claim 1 , wherein the support structure has sufficient rigidity such that the support structure is configured to exert enough radial force after implantation to anchor the support structure within the lumen without triggering a systemic response from the lumen wall.

16. The device of claim 1, wherein the support structure has sufficient rigidity such that the support structure is configured to exert enough radial force after implantation to distend the lumen wall.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein the crossover point is configured to exert enough radial force after implantation to distend the lumen wall.

18. The device of claim 16, wherein the at least two loops are configured to exert enough radial force after implantation to distend the lumen wall.

19. The device of claim 1, wherein a second occlusive material is attached to and across a second of the at least two loops formed by the support structure.

20. The device of claim 19, further comprising a third loop formed by the support structure, wherein a third occlusive material is attached to and across the third loop.

21. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a tether attached to one of the at least two loops formed by the support structure.

22. The device of claim 1, further comprising one or more anchors that extend outwardly from the support structure.

23. The device of claim 22, wherein the anchors are barbs.

24. An occlusion device, comprising:

a first spiral support member having a first end and a second end;

a second spiral support member positioned adjacent to and crossing the first spiral support member to form an open loop between the first end or the second end of the first spiral support member and a movable crossover point where the second spiral support member crosses the first spiral support member; and

an occlusive material extending to and across the open loop, wherein the occlusive material is configured to occlude the flow of fluid within a lumen.

25. The device of claim 24, further comprising a first retrieval feature adjacent to the first end.

26. The device of claim 25, further comprising a second retrieval feature adjacent to the second end.

27. The device of claim 24, wherein the occlusive material is a sheet.

28. The device of claim 24, wherein the first spiral support member and the second spiral support member has sufficient rigidity such that the first and second spiral support members are configured to exert enough radial force after implantation within the lumen to trigger a systemic response from the lumen wall.

29. The device of claim 24, wherein the first spiral support member and the second spiral support member has sufficient rigidity such that the first and second spiral support members are configured to exert enough radial force after implantation within the lumen to anchor the first and second spiral support members within the lumen without triggering a systemic response from the lumen wall.

30. The device of claim 24, wherein the first spiral support member and the second spiral support member has sufficient rigidity such that the first and second spiral support members are configured to exert enough radial force after implantation within the lumen to distend the lumen wall.
