Abstract

Disclosed herein are current output architectures for implantable stimulator devices. Current source and sink circuitry is divided into a plurality of stages, each of which is capable via an associated switch bank of sourcing or sinking an amount of current to or from any one of the electrodes of the device. The current source circuitry is distinct from the current sink circuitry, and the two share no common circuit nodes prior to connection to the electrodes. In other words, the current source circuitry and the current sink circuitry do not share a common node other than the electrodes. Each stage is preferably formed of a current mirror for receiving a reference current and outputting a scaled version of current to that stage'"'"'s switch bank. The scalar at each stage can be set by wiring a desired number of output transistors in parallel.

Claims

1. An implantable stimulator device, comprising:

a plurality of electrode nodes implantable adjacent to tissue to be stimulated;

a plurality of first stages, each first stage comprising;

a first current, and

a plurality of first switches controllable to provide the first current to more than one of the plurality of electrode nodes; and

a plurality of second stages, each second stage comprising;

a second current, and

a plurality of second switches controllable to provide the second current to more than one of the plurality of electrode nodes.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein each first stage further comprises a first generator configured to produce the first current, and wherein each second stage further comprises a second generator configured to produce the second current.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the first generators are coupled to a first power supply, and wherein the second generators are coupled to a second power supply.

4. The device of claim 2, wherein the first and second generators are configured to respectively convert a reference current into the first and second currents.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein the first and second currents comprise scalars of the reference current.

6. The device of claim 2, wherein the first and second generators respectively comprise first and second current sources.

7. The device of claim 6, wherein the first and second current sources respectively comprise first and second current mirrors.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein each first and second current mirror receives a reference current.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein each first current mirror receives a same first reference current, and wherein each second current mirror receives a same second reference current.

10. The device of claim 8, wherein a scalar between the reference current and the first and second currents in each stage is respectively set by a number of parallel output transistors in each first and second current mirror.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein a magnitude of the first currents is pre-set in each of the first stages, and wherein a magnitude of the second currents is pre-set in each of the second stages.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein the first currents are of equal magnitude in the first stages, and wherein the second currents are of equal magnitude in the second stages.

13. The device of claim 11, wherein the first currents are not of equal magnitude in the first stages, and wherein the second currents are not of equal magnitude in the second stages.

14. The device of claim 13, wherein the magnitude of the first currents varies linearly across at least some of the first stages, and wherein the magnitude of the second currents varies linearly across at least some of the second stages.

15. The device of claim 13, wherein the magnitude of the first currents varies exponentially across at least some of the first stages, and wherein the magnitude of the second currents varies exponentially across at least some of the second stages.

16. The device of claim 1, wherein the first current in each first stage sources current to the electrode nodes via the first switches, and wherein the second current in each second stage sinks current from the electrode nodes via the second switches.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein a current at each electrode node comprises a sum of the source and sink currents provided by each of the first and second stages to that electrode node.

18. The device of claim 1, wherein there are L first stages and L second stages, and wherein there are N electrode nodes.

19. The device of claim 18, wherein there are N switches in each of the L first stages and each of the L second stages.

20. The device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of first switches in each stage are controllable to provide the first current to all of the plurality of electrode nodes, and wherein the plurality of second switches in each stage are controllable to provide the second current to all of the plurality of electrode nodes.

21. An implantable stimulator device, comprising:

a plurality of electrode nodes implantable adjacent to tissue to be stimulated;

current source circuitry comprising a plurality of first stages, wherein each first stage is controllable to source a source current to more than one of the plurality of electrode nodes via first output paths; and

current sink circuitry comprising a plurality of second stages, wherein each second stage is controllable to sink a sink current from more than one of the plurality of electrode nodes via second output paths,

wherein the first and second output paths do not share a common node other than the electrode nodes.

22. The device of claim 21, wherein each first stage further comprises a first generator configured to produce the source current, and wherein each second stage further comprises a second generator configured to produce the sink current.

23. The device of claim 22, wherein the first generators are coupled to a first power supply, and wherein the second generators are coupled to a second power supply.

24. The device of claim 22, wherein the first and second generators are configured to respectively convert a reference current into the source and sink currents.

25. The device of claim 24, wherein the source and sink currents comprise scalars of the reference current.

26. The device of claim 22, wherein the first and second generators respectively comprise first and second current sources.

27. The device of claim 26, wherein the first and second current sources respectively comprise first and second current mirrors.

28. The device of claim 27, wherein each first and second current mirror receives a reference current.

29. The device of claim 28, wherein each first current mirror receives a same first reference current, and wherein each second current mirror receives a same second reference current.

30. The device of claim 28, wherein a scalar between the reference current and the source and sink currents in each stage is respectively set by a number of parallel output transistors in each first and second current mirror.

31. The device of claim 21, wherein a magnitude of the source currents is pre-set in each of the first stages, and wherein a magnitude of the sink currents is pre-set in each of the second stages.

32. The device of claim 31, wherein the source currents are of equal magnitude in the first stages, and wherein the sink currents are of equal magnitude in the second stages.

33. The device of claim 31, wherein the source currents are not of equal magnitude in the first stages, and wherein the sink currents are not of equal magnitude in the second stages.

34. The device of claim 33, wherein the magnitude of the source currents varies linearly across at least some of the first stages, and wherein the magnitude of the sink currents varies linearly across at least some of the second stages.

35. The device of claim 33, wherein the magnitude of the source currents varies exponentially across at least some of the first stages, and wherein the magnitude of the sink currents varies exponentially across at least some of the second stages.

36. The device of claim 21, wherein each first stage is controllable to source the source current to more than one of the plurality of electrode nodes via a first switch bank, and wherein each second stage is controllable to sink a sink current from more than one of the plurality of electrode nodes via a second switch bank.

37. The device of claim 36, wherein a current at each electrode node comprises a sum of the source and sink currents provided by each of the first and second stages to that electrode node.

38. The device of claim 21, wherein there are L first stages and L second stages, and wherein there are N electrode nodes.

39. The device of claim 38, wherein there are N switches in each of the L first stages and each of the L second stages.

40. The device of claim 21, wherein each first stage is controllable to source the source current to all of the plurality of electrode nodes via the first output paths, and wherein each second stage is controllable to sink the sink current to all of the plurality of electrode nodes via the second output paths.
