Abstract

A lighting apparatus includes at least one light emitting device, such as one or more LEDs, detection circuitry coupled to a power input of the lighting apparatus and arranged to detect a characteristic of a modulation of the power input, supervisory circuitry, such as a processor, coupled to the detection circuitry, and a network interface, coupled to the supervisory circuitry, to communicate over a network. The supervisory circuitry is adapted to receive a message that includes brightness information over the network, receive information regarding the characteristic of the modulation of the power input from the detection circuitry, and control a brightness of the at least one light emitting device based on the brightness information and the information regarding the characteristic modulation of the power input.

Claims

1. A method for controlling brightness of a lighting apparatus, the method comprising:

receiving a message over a network at the lighting apparatus, and changing a brightness of the lighting apparatus based on the message; and

detecting a change in a characteristic of a modulation of a power input of the lighting apparatus, and changing the brightness of the lighting apparatus based on the change in the characteristic.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the power input comprises alternating current electrical power, and the modulation comprises phase control of the alternating current electrical power.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the modulation comprises amplitude control of the power input.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the power input comprises direct current electrical power, and the modulation comprises pulse-width modulation of the direct current electrical power.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the message comprises information about a relative change of brightness;

and

wherein the changing of the brightness of the lighting apparatus based on the message comprises changing the brightness of the lighting apparatus based on both a previous brightness of the lighting apparatus and the information about the relative change of brightness.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the message comprises information about an absolute brightness;

and

wherein the changing of the brightness of the lighting apparatus based on the message comprises changing the brightness of the lighting apparatus to the absolute brightness.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the changing of the brightness of the lighting apparatus based on the change in the characteristic comprises changing the brightness of the lighting apparatus based on both a previous brightness of the lighting apparatus and an amount of the change in the characteristic.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the changing of the brightness of the lighting apparatus based on the change in the characteristic comprises changing the brightness of the lighting apparatus to an absolute brightness based on the characteristic of the modulation.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

storing a value representing a brightness of the lighting apparatus in a non-volatile memory; and

in response to detecting that the lighting apparatus is powering up;

retrieving the value representing the brightness of the lighting apparatus from the non-volatile memory; and

setting the brightness of the lighting apparatus based on the retrieved value.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the message is a first message, the method further comprising:

receiving a second message over the network comprising configuration information; and

storing the configuration information in one or more registers in the lighting apparatus;

wherein the changing of the brightness of the lighting apparatus based on the change in the characteristic is also based on the configuration information stored in the one or more registers; and

the changing of the brightness of the lighting apparatus based on the first message is also based on the configuration information stored in the one or more registers.

11. An integrated circuit comprising:

at least one input line;

at least one output line to control a brightness of a light emitting device; and

a processor coupled to the at least one input line and the at least one output line;

wherein the processor is configured to;

receive a message comprising brightness information over a network;

receive information regarding a modulation of a power line through the at least one input line; and

control the at least one output line based on the brightness information and the information regarding the modulation of the power line.

12. The integrated circuit of claim 11, wherein the information regarding the modulation of the power line is based on a duty cycle of the at least one input line.

13. The integrated circuit of claim 11, wherein the information regarding the modulation of the power line is based on a voltage level of the at least one input line.

14. The integrated circuit of claim 11, wherein the network comprises a wireless network;

the integrated circuit further comprising a wireless network interface, coupled to the processor, to communicate over the wireless network.

15. A lighting apparatus comprising:

at least one light emitting device;

detection circuitry coupled to a power input of the lighting apparatus and arranged to detect a characteristic of a modulation of the power input;

supervisory circuitry coupled to the detection circuitry; and

a network interface, coupled to the supervisory circuitry, to communicate over a network;

wherein the supervisory circuitry is adapted to

receive a message comprising brightness information over the network;

receive information regarding the characteristic of the modulation of the power input from the detection circuitry; and

control a brightness of the at least one light emitting device based on the brightness information and the information regarding the characteristic modulation of the power input.

16. The lighting apparatus of claim 15, wherein the at least one light emitting element comprises one or more LEDs.

17. The lighting apparatus of claim 15, wherein the characteristic comprises phase information of an alternating current electrical power at the power input.

18. The lighting apparatus of claim 15, wherein the network interface comprises a wireless network interface, and the network comprises a radio frequency network.

19. The lighting apparatus of claim 15, wherein the network interface comprises a powerline network interface, and the network comprises a powerline network.

20. The lighting apparatus of claim 15, further comprising:

a non-volatile memory, coupled to the supervisory circuitry, to store a brightness value;

wherein the supervisory circuitry is further adapted to detect that that the lighting apparatus is powering up and set an initial brightness of the at least one light emitting device based on the brightness value.

21. The lighting apparatus of claim 15, further comprising one or more configuration registers;

wherein the supervisory circuitry is further adapted to;

receive a configuration message comprising configuration information over the network;

store the configuration information in the one or more configuration registers; and

control the brightness of the at least one light emitting device based on the configuration information in addition to the brightness information and the information regarding the characteristic modulation of the power input.

22. The lighting apparatus of claim 15, further comprising a shell at least partially surrounding the at least one light emitting device, the detection circuitry, the network interface, and the supervisory circuitry, the shell at least partially transparent and substantially the same size and shape as a typical incandescent light bulb;

wherein the power input comprises an Edison screw base coupled to the shell.
