Techniques for managing idle state activity in mobile devices
First Claim
1. An apparatus, comprising:
- a radio-frequency (RF) transceiver; and
a message aggregation module operable on a processing circuit to intercept a first message from a first mobile data application during an idle mode of a device, the first message operable to trigger a transition of the device from the idle mode to a connected mode by causing a radio resource control message to be sent from the device to a radio access network, the message aggregation module to;
determine whether to aggregate the first message based on a type of the first message;
in response to a determination not to aggregate the first message, forward the first message for transmission; and
in response to a determination to aggregate the first message, store the first message in a first buffer in order to maintain the device in the idle mode and schedule the first message for transmission by the RF transceiver at a defined time instance based on a delay tolerance for the first mobile data application, the defined time instance to comprise a time at which the device is in the connected mode.

Abstract
An apparatus may comprise a radio-frequency (RF) transceiver and a message aggregation module arranged to intercept multiple messages from one or more mobile data applications during an idle mode of a device, one or more of the multiple messages operable to trigger a transition of the device from the idle mode to a connected mode by causing a radio resource control message to be sent from the device to a radio access network, the message aggregation module to store the multiple messages in a buffer associated with the one or more mobile data applications in order to maintain the device in the idle mode, and schedule for transmission by the RF transceiver the stored messages at a defined time instance based on a delay tolerance for the one or more mobile data applications when the device is in the connected mode. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

12. A method, comprising:
-
intercepting a first message from a first mobile data application during an idle mode of a wireless device, the first message operable to trigger a transition of the wireless device from the idle mode to a connected mode; determining whether to aggregate the first message based on a type of the first message; and in response to a determination to aggregate the first message; storing the first message in a first buffer for later transmission in order to maintain the wireless device in the idle mode for an extended time period; scheduling for transmission, by a processor circuit, the stored first message at a defined time instance based on a delay tolerance associated with the first mobile data application; and transmitting the stored first message, by a wireless transceiver, from the wireless device to the radio access network at the defined time instance. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)

20. At least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising a plurality of instructions that, when executed, cause a system to:
-
intercept a first message from a first mobile data application during an idle mode of a device, the first message operable to trigger a transition of the device from the idle mode to a connected mode by causing a radio resource control message to be sent from the device to a radio access network; determine whether to aggregate the first message based on a type of the first message; and in response to a determination to aggregate the first message; store the first message in a first buffer in order to maintain the device in the idle mode; and schedule for transmission by the RF transceiver the stored first message at a defined time instance based on a delay tolerance for the first mobile data application when the device is in the connected mode. - View Dependent Claims (21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28)
