Abstract

Disclosed is a balloon catheter that can comprise an elongate support member, an inflation tube, a guidewire tube and a balloon. The guidewire tube can define a guidewire port at its proximal end, and can extend from the port through an opening in a wall of the elongate support member and distally through a first lumen of the elongate support member, in some cases to the distal end of the catheter. The inflation tube can be disposed over a distal portion of the elongate support member, a portion of the guidewire tube, a portion of the inner assembly, or any combination thereof, forming a second lumen. The distal end of the balloon can be attached to the guidewire tube and the proximal end of the balloon can be attached to the inflation tube. The inside of the balloon can be in fluid communication with the first lumen and with the second lumen, allowing the balloon to be inflated and/or deflated. The elongate support member can also have cuts in it. For example, the elongate support member can have apertures formed in it, or apertures and spiral cuts.

Claims

1. A catheter comprising:

a hypotube defining a first lumen and having proximal and distal ends, and proximal, intermediate, and distal portions disposed between the proximal and distal ends;

an inflation tube with distal and proximal ends, wherein the proximal end of the inflation tube is bonded to the intermediate portion of the hypotube and a portion of the inflation tube is disposed over the distal portion of the hypotube such that the portion of the inflation tube overlaps the distal portion of the hypotube, forming a second lumen therebetween; and

a guidewire tube with a proximal end, a distal end, and an outer surface extending from the proximal end to the distal end, the proximal end forming a guidewire port, the guidewire tube extending through an opening in the hypotube and distally through the hypotube, forming a guidewire lumen;

wherein the second lumen extends radially outward from an outer surface of the distal portion of the hypotube to an inner surface of the portion of the inflation tube overlapping the distal portion of the hypotube.

2. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the second lumen extends radially outward from at least a portion of the outer surface of the guidewire tube to the inner surface of the inflation tube.

3. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the guidewire tube proximal end extends through a side wall of the inflation tube, forming the guidewire port.

4. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the second lumen is annularly shaped.

5. The catheter of claim 1, further comprising a balloon disposed on a distal portion of the catheter, the balloon in fluid communication with the first lumen and the second lumen.

6. The catheter of claim 5, wherein the balloon has a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the proximal end is attached to the inflation tube and the distal end is attached to the guidewire tube, and the balloon is in fluid communication with the first lumen and the second lumen.

7. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the second lumen is fluidly connected to the first lumen, creating a fluid flow pathway from the proximal portion of the catheter to the distal portion of the catheter.

8. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the hypotube is concentrically placed within the inflation tube.

9. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the hypotube has apertures in the distal portion of the hypotube, increasing the flexibility of the hypotube.

10. The catheter of claim 9, wherein a number of the apertures per unit length of hypotube gets higher in a distal direction, increasing the flexibility in a distal direction.

11. The catheter of claim 9, wherein a size of the apertures gets larger in a distal direction, increasing the flexibility in a distal direction.

12. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the hypotube has one or more cuts formed in the proximal portion and one or more cuts formed in the distal portion, the one or more cuts of the proximal portion differing from the one or more cuts of the distal portion in at least one of the following characteristics:

cut density, cut shape, cut angle, placement of the cuts relative to one another, and the type of cut.

The catheter of claim 12, wherein the one or more cuts in the proximal portion comprise a plurality of apertures of a first density and the one or more cuts in the distal section comprise a plurality of apertures of a second density, wherein the second density is greater than the first density.

14. The catheter of claim 12, wherein the one or more cuts in the proximal portion comprise a plurality of apertures and the one or more cuts in the distal section comprises one or more spiral cuts.

15. The catheter of claim 14, wherein at least a portion of the one or more spiral cuts is disposed around the guidewire tube and the one or more spiral cuts that is disposed around the guidewire tube has an outer diameter that is larger than the outer diameter of the proximal portion of the hypotube that is not disposed around the guidewire tube.

16. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the hypotube comprises stainless steel.

17. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the hypotube comprises Nitinol.

18. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the hypotube extends distally at least to the distal end of the guidewire tube.

19. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the catheter has a balloon attached to a distal portion of the catheter and the guidewire tube extends through and distally of the balloon.

20. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the hypotube extends along a portion of the guidewire tube and through and distally of the balloon.

21. The catheter of claim 1, further comprising a polymer jacket around the hypotube.

22. The catheter of claim 21, wherein the polymer jacket extends from a proximal portion of the hypotube to the intermediate portion of the hypotube.

23. The catheter of claim 22, wherein the hypotube has cuts formed in it proximal of the intermediate portion, and the polymer jacket fluidly seals the cuts, forming a fluid tight first lumen proximal of the intermediate portion.

24. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the hypotube has cuts in it distal of the intermediate portion and the cuts form a fluid pathway from the first lumen to the second lumen.

25. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the opening comprises a cut out portion of the hypotube.

26. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the opening comprises a space between two adjacent windings of a spiral cut portion of the hypotube.

27. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the opening in the hypotube is distal of the intermediate portion.

28. A catheter comprising:

a hypotube having a proximal end, a distal end, a first lumen extending from the proximal end through the distal end, a proximal portion, a distal portion, and an intermediate portion disposed between the proximal and distal portions;

an inflation tube having a proximal end and a distal end;

wherein the proximal end of the inflation tube is bonded to the intermediate portion of the hypotube to define a bonding region;

wherein at least a portion of the inflation tube distal of the bonding region is disposed about and spaced radially from the distal portion of the hypotube, thereby forming a second lumen surrounding the distal portion of the hypotube; and

a guidewire tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a guidewire lumen extending therethrough, the proximal end forming a guidewire port;

wherein the guidewire tube extends through an opening in a sidewall of the hypotube and distally through the hypotube.

29. The catheter of claim 28, wherein the opening is disposed distal of the bonding region.

30. The catheter of claim 29, wherein the guidewire tube extends through a side wall of the inflation tube.

31. The catheter of claim 28, further comprising a balloon disposed on a distal portion of the catheter, the balloon in fluid communication with the first lumen and the second lumen.

32. The catheter of claim 31, wherein the balloon has a proximal end attached to the inflation tube and a distal end attached to the guidewire tube.

33. The catheter of claim 28, wherein the second lumen is fluidly connected to the first lumen to define a fluid flow pathway from a proximal portion of the catheter to a distal portion of the catheter.

34. The catheter of claim 28, wherein the hypotube includes a plurality of apertures in the distal portion of the hypotube, such that the distal portion of the hypotube is more flexible than the proximal portion of the hypotube.

35. The catheter of claim 34, wherein the plurality of apertures increases in quantity per unit length of the hypotube in a distal direction, such that flexibility of the distal portion increases in the distal direction.

36. The catheter of claim 34, wherein the plurality of apertures increases in size in a distal direction, such that flexibility of the distal portion increases in the distal direction.
