Abstract

A removable and serviceable paving apparatus including an access port for providing access to the interior of the slab. The access port is operable to improve access to components of the paving system prior to, during, and/or after installation. The paving apparatus further includes a removable fastener for improving removability and serviceability. The removable fastener attaches the paving apparatus to its neighboring structures to form a paving surface, may be disengaged from the neighboring structures for removal, repair and/or service of the paving apparatus, and may be re-engaged upon re-installation of the paving apparatus.

Claims

1. A paving apparatus, comprising:

a slab having an access port (i) extending at least partially into the slab, and (ii) configured to provide access to an interior portion of the slab;

a receiver (i) at least partially embedded in the access port of the slab, and (ii) configured to provide a point of engagement for the slab;

a first side of the slab;

a cavity in the slab terminating at the first side, the cavity extending substantially horizontally and perpendicular to the access port;

a removable fastener configured to extend at least partially through the cavity; and

at least one of a stop bolt and a drive bolt being configured to (i) couple with the removable fastener, and (ii) control horizontal movement of the removable fastener.

2. The paving apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bolt is a stop bolt.

3. The paving apparatus of claim 1, wherein the bolt is a drive bolt.

4. The paving apparatus of claim 2, wherein the removable fastener includes a dowel bar.

5. The paving apparatus of claim 3, wherein the removable fastener includes a dowel bar.

6. The paving apparatus of claim 2, wherein the stop bolt couples with the removable fastener at an intersection between the cavity and the access port.

7. The paving apparatus of claim 3, wherein the drive bolt couples with the removable fastener at an intersection between the cavity and the access port.

8. The paving apparatus of claim 2, wherein the stop bolt is removably secured to the receiver.

9. The paving apparatus of claim 6, wherein the stop bolt includes teeth or thread machined into an outer surface to couple with the removable fastener.

10. The paving apparatus of claim 7, wherein the drive bolt includes teeth or thread machined into an outer surface to couple with the removable fastener.

11. The paving apparatus of claim 1, wherein the access to the interior portion of the slab provided by the access port includes availability of at least one of the following via the access port during installation of the slab:

(A) mechanical engagement with a removable fastener at least partially housed in a horizontal cavity defined by the slab;

(B) fluid communication with a grouting port within the slab;

(C) wired connection with a sensor embedded in the slab; and

(D) a wall of the slab.

12. The paving apparatus of claim 11, wherein at least element (C) is available and the sensor is configured to monitor at least one of (1) a physical condition of the slab and (2) the presence of a vehicle.

13. The paving apparatus of claim 1, wherein the access port is further configured to provide power access.

14. The paving apparatus of claim 1, wherein the access port is further configured to provide access to networking components.

15. The paving apparatus of claim 1, wherein the access port is at least partially sealed following installation.

16. The paving apparatus of claim 15, wherein the access port is filled with grout following installation.

17. The paving apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one of (A) a filling and (B) a shroud in the cavity following installation.

18. The paving apparatus of claim 1, wherein the receiver is a lift lug.

19. The paving apparatus of claim 18, wherein the lift lug is secured to the access port.

20. The paving apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a grouting port.

21. The paving apparatus of claim 20, wherein the grouting port is at least partly housed within a lift bolt configured to be secured to the receiver.

22. The paving apparatus of claim 1, wherein the access port is at least partially defined by a wall of the slab.

23. The paving apparatus of claim 22, wherein the receiver comprises a lift lug having legs extending into a surrounding area of the slab.

24. The paving apparatus of claim 23, wherein the legs are fixed to an internal reinforcement system of the slab.

25. A method for servicing a paving apparatus, the method comprising the steps of:

disengaging a removable fastener of the paving apparatus from a receiving structure; and

securing a crane to a receiver;

wherein,

the crane is operable to permit repositioning of the paving apparatus,

the step of disengaging the removable fastener includes engaging the removable fastener with a drive bolt.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the step of disengaging the removable fastener includes removing a stop bolt from the paving apparatus.

27. The method of claim 25, wherein the paving apparatus includes a cavity housing the removable fastener, the method further comprising:

re-engaging the removable fastener; and

applying grout to the cavity.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein the paving apparatus includes an access port, the method further comprising:

re-engaging the removable fastener; and

at least partially filling the access port with grout.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the receiver is secured to the access port.

30. The method of claim 25, wherein engaging the drive bolt and the removable fastener includes inserting the drive bolt into an access port.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein disengaging the removable fastener from the receiving structure includes rotating the drive bolt.

32. The method of claim 30, wherein the receiver is secured to the access port.

34. The method of claim 28, wherein the paving apparatus includes a cavity housing the removable fastener, the method further comprising:

re-engaging the removable fastener; and

applying grout to the cavity.

33. A method for servicing a paving apparatus, the method comprising the steps of:

removing a removable plug adjacent to an access port of the paving apparatus;

securing a lift bolt to a receiver;

securing a lifting means to the lift bolt; and

disengaging a removable fastener of the paving apparatus from a receiving structure

wherein,

the lift bolt, lift lug, and lifting means are operable to permit repositioning of the paving apparatus,

the step of disengaging the removable fastener includes removing a stop bolt from the paving apparatus,

the step of disengaging the removable fastener includes coupling a drive bolt to the removable fastener and rotating the drive bolt to remove its attachment to the receiving structure.

35. The method of claim 33, further comprising:

re-engaging the removable fastener; and

at least partially filling the access port with grout.

36. The method of claim 33, wherein the receiver is secured to the access port.

37. The method of claim 33, further comprising inserting the drive bolt into the access port to couple with the removable fastener.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein the receiver is secured to the access port.

39. A method for servicing a paving apparatus, the method comprising the steps of:

removing a removable plug adjacent to an access port of the paving apparatus;

securing a lift bolt to a receiver;

securing a lifting means to the lift bolt;

disengaging a removable fastener of the paving apparatus from a receiving structure; and

lowering the paving apparatus and re-engaging the removable fastener to the receiving structure,

wherein,

the lift bolt, lift lug, and lifting means are operable to permit repositioning of the paving apparatus,

the step of disengaging the removable fastener includes removing a stop bolt from the paving apparatus.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the paving apparatus includes a cavity housing the removable fastener, the method further comprising, after re-engaging the removable fastener, applying grout to the cavity.

41. The method of claim 39, further comprising, after re-engaging the removable fastener, at least partially filling the access port with grout.

42. The method of claim 39, wherein the receiver is secured to the access port.
