1. A vehicle energy harvester comprising:

  • a subunit having an upper surface forming a roadway surface;

    a vehicle activated treadle on the subunit, the vehicle activated treadle configured to be moveable between a first position and a second position in response to contact with a part of a vehicle travelling over the roadway surface;

    a generator actuated by the movement of the vehicle activated treadle between the first position and the second position to thereby generate power in response to the movement of the vehicle activated treadle between the first position and the second position,wherein the vehicle activated treadle includes an arm portion coupled to the vehicle activated treadle and moveable with the vehicle activated treadle; and

    a vehicle speed detection device that detects a speed of the arm portion of the vehicle activated treadle during the movement and calculates a speed of the vehicle travelling over the roadway surface based on the detected speed of the arm portion of the vehicle activated treadle.
