1. A method for use in a base station (BS), the method comprising:

  • generating a stream of bits for transmission, the stream of bits including data bits and piggybacked acknowledgement/non-acknowledgement (PAN) bits;

    interleaving the stream of bits to create an interleaved stream of bits;

    modulating the interleaved stream of bits to create a plurality of symbols, wherein each symbol represents a plurality of bits and has a least significant bit (LSB) position, and wherein no PAN bits are present in the LSB position of each of the plurality of symbols; and

    transmitting the plurality of symbols.
