Abstract

A biopsy device includes a hollow needle, and a sample-receiving device that is movable in the hollow needle. A power-driven element having a motor is provided. A transport device is drivably coupled to the motor. The transport device includes a toothed flexible member drivably engaged with a drive gear. The toothed flexible member has a distal portion coupled to the sample-receiving device. The toothed flexible member is configured to move the sample-receiving device in the hollow needle between an extended position and a retracted position. The toothed flexible member has a proximal portion that extends proximal to the proximal end of the hollow needle. A housing element has a helical coiling-up groove configured to accommodate the proximal portion of the toothed flexible member when the sample-receiving device is retracted to the retracted position.

Claims

1. A biopsy device for removing at least one tissue sample from a body of a living being, the biopsy device comprising:

a hollow needle having a longitudinal axis, a proximal end and a distal end;

a sample-receiving device received in the hollow needle, the sample-receiving device configured to move in the hollow needle between an extended position and a retracted position, the sample-receiving device having a cavity configured to receive a tissue sample;

a drive mechanism configured to displace the hollow needle in a distal direction relative to the sample-receiving device to sever tissue received by the sample-receiving device;

a power-driven element having a motor;

a transport device drivably coupled to the motor, the transport device including a drive gear and a toothed flexible member drivably engaged with the drive gear, the toothed flexible member having a distal portion coupled to the sample-receiving device, the toothed flexible member configured to move along the longitudinal axis to move the sample-receiving device in the hollow needle between the extended position and the retracted position, the toothed flexible member having a proximal portion that extends proximal to the proximal end of the hollow needle; and

a housing element having a helical coiling-up groove configured to accommodate the proximal portion of the toothed flexible member when the sample-receiving device is retracted to the retracted position.

2. The biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the helical coiling-up groove is defined by a wall element configured to form a spiral, the wall element being arranged such that contact between successive coiled-up portions of the toothed flexible member is prevented.

3. The biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the toothed flexible member is configured to flex away from the longitudinal axis of the hollow needle to coil in the helical coiling-up groove of the housing element.

4. The biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the housing element is arranged at a proximal end portion of the biopsy device.

The biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the toothed flexible member comprises an elongate element having a row of regularly spaced teeth, and the drive gear comprises a gear wheel having a rim of teeth configured to interact with the regularly spaced teeth of the elongate element to move the elongate element in the hollow needle when the drive gear is rotated.

6. The biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the sample-receiving device has a tapered distal tip located distal to the cavity, the cavity having a lateral opening.

The biopsy device of claim 1, wherein in the extended position the sample-receiving device projects from the distal end of the needle, the distal end of the hollow needle being defined by a circumferential cutting edge, and in the retracted position the sample-receiving device is accommodated in the hollow needle.

8. The biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the sample-receiving device has a length that is shorter than a length of the hollow needle.

The biopsy device of claim 1, further comprising a handle unit with a power source and the motor for driving the transport device, and wherein the transport device, the hollow needle, the sample-receiving device, and the housing element having the helical coiling-up groove are comprised in a disposable unit, the disposable unit being releasably secured to the handle unit.

10. The biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the hollow needle has a circumferential cutting edge at the distal end.

11. A disposable biopsy unit for releasable attachment to a handle unit, the disposable biopsy unit comprising:

a hollow needle having a longitudinal axis, a proximal end and a distal end;

a sample-receiving device received in the hollow needle, the sample-receiving device configured to move in the hollow needle between an extended position and a retracted position, the sample-receiving device having a cavity configured to receive a tissue sample;

a transport device including a drive gear and a toothed flexible member drivably engaged with the drive gear, the toothed flexible member having a distal portion coupled to the sample-receiving device, the toothed flexible member configured to move along the longitudinal axis to move the sample-receiving device in the hollow needle between the extended position and the retracted position, the toothed flexible member having a proximal portion that extends proximal to the proximal end of the hollow needle; and

a housing element having a helical coiling-up groove configured to receive the proximal portion of the toothed flexible member as the sample-receiving device is retracted to the retracted position.

12. The disposable biopsy unit of claim 11, wherein the helical coiling-up groove is defined by a wall element configured to form a spiral, the wall element being arranged such that contact between successive coiled-up portions of the toothed flexible member is prevented.

13. The disposable biopsy unit of claim 11, wherein the toothed flexible member is configured to flex away from the longitudinal axis of the hollow needle to coil in the helical coiling-up groove of the housing element.

14. The disposable biopsy unit of claim 11, wherein the housing element is arranged at a proximal end portion of the disposable biopsy unit.

The disposable biopsy unit of claim 11, wherein the toothed flexible member comprises an elongate element having a row of regularly spaced teeth, and the drive gear comprises a gear wheel having a rim of teeth configured to interact with the regularly spaced teeth of the elongate element to move the elongate element in the hollow needle when the drive gear is rotated.

16. The disposable biopsy unit of claim 11, wherein the sample-receiving device has a tapered distal tip located distal to the cavity, the cavity having a lateral opening.

The disposable biopsy unit of claim 11, wherein in the extended position the sample-receiving device projects from the distal end of the needle, the distal end of the hollow needle being defined by a circumferential cutting edge, and in the retracted position the sample-receiving device is accommodated in the hollow needle.

18. The disposable biopsy unit of claim 11, wherein the sample-receiving device has a length that is shorter than a length of the hollow needle.

19. The disposable biopsy unit of claim 11, wherein the drive gear is a component of a gear train adapted to be interposed between the toothed flexible member and a motor of the handle unit.

20. The disposable biopsy unit of claim 11, wherein the hollow needle has a circumferential cutting edge at the distal end.
