Abstract

A system and method for a patch-like, self-contained substance infusion device (700) which can be attached to a skin surface via an adhesive contact surface. A push button (780) activation assembly can then be used to remove an interlock (730), allowing a disk or Belleville spring (735) assembly to apply an essentially even and constant pressure to the contents of a fluid reservoir assembly (710). This allows the release of one or more spring-loaded patient needles (760) into the skin surface, and establishes a fluid communication path between the patient needles (760) and the pressurized fluid reservoir contents thereby delivering an infusion into the skin. The push button (780) activation assembly further allows the release of one or more improved safety mechanisms (794) after use.

Claims

1. A device for delivering a medicament into a body of a patient by injection into or through a skin surface of said patient, comprising:

a housing having a bottom surface adapted to contact a skin surface of a patient;

a needle adapted for penetration of said skin surface and for movement through an aperture;

a reservoir, disposed within said housing, for containing said medicament;

a needle holder for holding said needle;

an activation button slidably disposed with said device;

a safety member; and

at least one shield configured to be held in place by said safety member, said shield comprising a ramp configured to directly contact and raise said needle holder to retract said needle into said device;

wherein said shield is urged to move relative to said bottom surface from a position exposing said needle into a position to at least partially cover said needle or said aperture.

2. The device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said safety member further comprises a detent releasably held by said activation button, wherein said activation of said device is configured to release said detent of said safety member.

The device as claimed in claim 2, wherein said safety member further comprises a skin adhesion surface to move said safety member upon release by said activation button and removal from a skin surface, wherein said movement of said safety member releases said shield to be urged into a position to at least partially cover said needle or said aperture.

4. The device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a spring disposed between said ramp and said activation button, wherein said movement of said activation button is configured to load said spring prior to release of said safety member by said activation button.

5. The device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said ramp is configured to slidably cover said needle or said aperture.

6. The device according to claim 1, wherein movement of said activation button releases said safety member to move, and movement of said safety member releases said shield.

7. The device according to claim 1, wherein said shield is urged to move substantially parallel to said bottom surface.

8. A device for delivering a medicament into a body of a patient by injection into or through a skin surface of said patient, comprising:

a housing having a bottom surface adapted to contact a skin surface of a patient;

a needle adapted for penetration of said skin surface and for movement through an aperture;

a needle holder for holding said needle;

an activation button slidably disposed with said device;

a safety member; and

at least one shield configured to be held in place by said safety member, said shield comprising a ramp configured to directly contact and raise said needle holder to retract said needle into said device;

wherein said shield is configured to be released from said safety member by movement of said device activation button and removal of said device from a skin surface, and said shield is urged to move relative to said bottom surface into a position to at least partially cover said needle or said aperture.

9. The device according to claim 8, wherein movement of said activation button releases said safety member to move, and movement of said safety member releases said shield.

10. The device according to claim 8, wherein said shield is urged to move substantially parallel to said bottom surface.

11. A device for delivering a medicament into a body of a patient by injection into or through a skin surface of said patient, comprising:

a housing having a bottom surface adapted to contact a skin surface of a patient;

an activation button slidably disposed with said device;

a needle adapted for penetration of said skin surface and for movement through an aperture;

a needle holder for holding said needle; and

at least one shield configured to be held in place prior to activation of said device, said shield being urged to move substantially parallel to said bottom surface into a position to at least partially cover said needle or said aperture;

wherein said shield comprises a ramp to raise said needle holder to retract said needle into said device.

12. The device as claimed in claim 11, further comprising a safety member, wherein said shield is configured to be held in place by said safety member prior to activation of said device.

13. A device with a housing having a bottom surface adapted to contact a skin surface of a patient, and a needle adapted for penetration of said skin surface and for movement through an aperture, comprising;

an activation button to activate said device thereby inserting said needle into said skin surface;

a needle holder for holding said needle;

a safety member; and

at least one shield configured to be held in place by said safety member, said shield comprising a ramp configured to contact and raise said needle holder to retract said injection needle into said device;

wherein said shield is configured to be released from said safety member by movement of said device activation button and removal of said device from a skin surface, and said shield is urged to move substantially parallel to said bottom surface from a position exposing said needle into a position to at least partially cover said needle or said aperture.

14. The device as claimed in claim 13, wherein said safety member further comprises a detent releasably held by said activation button, wherein said activation of said device is configured to release said detent of said safety member.

The device as claimed in claim 14, wherein said safety member further comprises a skin adhesion surface to move said safety member upon release by said activation button and removal from a skin surface, wherein said movement of said safety member releases said shield to be urged into a position to at least partially cover said needle or said aperture.

16. The device as claimed in claim 13, further comprising a spring disposed between said ramp and said activation button, wherein said movement of said activation button is configured to load said spring prior to release of said safety member by said activation button.

17. The device as claimed in claim 13, wherein said ramp is configured to slidably cover said needle or said aperture.

18. The device according to claim 13, wherein movement of said activation button releases said safety member to move, and movement of said safety member releases said shield.

19. A device for delivering a medicament into a body of a patient by injection into or through a skin surface of said patient, comprising:

a housing having a bottom surface adapted to contact a skin surface of a patient;

an activation button slidably disposed with said device;

a needle adapted for penetration of said skin surface and for movement through an aperture;

a needle holder for holding said needle; and

at least one shield configured to be held in place prior to activation of said device, said shield being urged to move substantially parallel to said bottom surface into a position to at least partially cover said needle or said aperture;

wherein said shield comprises a ramp configured to contact and raise said needle, holder to retract said needle into said device.
