- receiving, via a radio frequency wireless interface of an apparatus, one or more radio frequency signals from a wireless device, the one or more radio frequency signals indicating that the wireless device is capable of receiving optical powering and optical power requirements of the wireless device;
exchanging, by the apparatus, radio frequency wireless messages with the wireless device via the radio frequency wireless interface, to negotiate optical power delivery from the apparatus to the wireless device;
switching on, by the apparatus, an optical energy source in the apparatus; and
transmitting, by the apparatus, from the optical energy source, optical power to the wireless device at a power level associated with the optical power requirements in response to the received one or more radio frequency wireless signals.

Example method, apparatus, and computer program product embodiments are disclosed for negotiation of wireless powering of passive objects. Example embodiments of the invention include a method comprising: receiving, via a radio frequency wireless interface of an apparatus, a radio frequency signal from a wireless device, indicating that the wireless device is capable of receiving optical powering; switching on, by the apparatus, an optical energy source in the apparatus; and transmitting, by the apparatus, from the optical energy source, optical power to the wireless device in response to the radio frequency signal.

transmitting, via a radio frequency wireless interface of an apparatus, a radio frequency signal providing initial power for a wireless device, the signal comprising at least one of a near field communication signal and a radio frequency identification signal; receiving, via the radio frequency wireless interface, a radio frequency signal from the wireless device in response to the transmitted radio frequency signal, the radio frequency signal indicating that the wireless device is capable of receiving optical powering; exchanging, by the apparatus, wireless radio frequency messages with the wireless device to negotiate optical power delivery from the apparatus; switching on, by the apparatus, an optical energy source in the apparatus; and transmitting, by the apparatus, optical power to the wireless device in response to the exchanged radio frequency messages.
