Abstract

An automated vending machine that can be selectively configured to include one or several temperature zones. A single refrigeration system and universal interior allows easy and economical assembly into a one, two, or three temperature zone machine. Thermal breaks and dividers are used to partition zones, when needed. The basic vending machine cabinet, dispensers, and controls are not changed between configurations. In one aspect, a universal air duct can be used for all three configurations, with minor changes.

Claims

1. An apparatus for providing automated vending of vendible items comprising:

a. a vending machine cabinet defining an interior product bay for vendible products, the product bay having a top and a bottom and comprising a vendible product inventory zone and a vertical dispensing zone along a side of the vendible product inventory zone and between the top and bottom of the product bay;

b. dispenser mechanisms that can be actuated by selection of a customer and for holding and dispensing selected vendible products into the vertical dispensing zone, the dispenser mechanisms distributed between the top and bottom of the vendible product inventory zone of the interior space;

c. a refrigeration unit including an evaporator under the bottom of the product bay;

d. an inner liner material adapted to either be continuous around substantially the whole product bay in a single temperature zone mode or include at least one thermal break between each of plural temperature zones between the top and bottom in the product bay to deter thermal conduction through the liner in a multiple temperature zone mode;

e. a channel or duct vertically along the product bay, the channel or duct being enclosed from at or near the evaporator under the bottom of the product bay to an opening at or near the top of the product bay in the single temperature zone mode, or divided into segments separated by thermally insulated material extending across the channel or duct and the vendible product inventory zone of the product bay but not the vertical dispensing zone to define two or more temperature zones within the product bay in the multiple temperature zone mode;

f. at least one opening to the duct in each zone;

g. a fan to circulate air in each temperature zone including along at least a portion of the channel or duct that is in the temperature zone;

h. so that a continuous unobstructed vertical dispensing zone is maintained for dispensing vendible products from any of the dispensers in the vendible product inventory zone while temperature can be selectively controlled for each temperature zone whether a single zone or plural temperature zones.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a sheet or other air flow diverter placed within the product bay to direct movement of air conducive to maintaining the temperature in a zone or zones and returning air to a said fan or the refrigeration unit for circulation purposes.

3. A multi-temperature zone cabinet having an interior space comprising:

a. a liner around the interior space;

b. a divider having a top and a bottom substantially partitioning the interior space into plural zones, each having a volume;

c. a heater at or above the top of the divider;

d. an air duct having a first end at the bottom of the cabinet and an opposite end at the top of the cabinet and defining a channel that extends substantially across one side of the interior of the cabinet;

e. an opening from the air duct into one of the plural zones at or below the bottom of the divider;

f. and opening from the air duct into the other of the plural zones at or above the top of the divider;

g. a fan in the one of the plural zones;

h. a fan in the other of the plural zones;

i. a turning vane in the air duct at the opening at or below the bottom of the divider;

j. a turning vane in the air duct at or above the opening at the top of the divider;

k. so that controlled, non-turbulent and laminar flow air flow is promoted in each zone, but at different temperatures.

4. The cabinet of claim 3 comprising a vending machine including an evaporator, a vending machine controller, and one or more dispensing mechanisms.

5. The cabinet of claim 4 further comprising a temperature sensor in each zone in communication with the vending machine controller to control operation of any of the evaporator, the heater, or fans to thermostatically maintain different temperatures in the zones.

6. A single or multiple temperature zone refrigerated vending machine made by the process comprising:

a. providing a cabinet having a top, bottom, side walls, and a back wall, and a door at the front defining an interior space;

b. mounting an evaporator at or near the bottom of the cabinet;

c. for a single temperature zone;

i. installing a liner in the interior space;

ii. installing an air chute comprising thermally conductive material from at or near the evaporator to at or near the top of the liner;

iii. adding a plurality of dispensing mechanisms distributed vertically in the interior space except for a vertical dispensing space;

iv. installing an air circulator for circulating air from at or near the evaporator through the chute and single temperature zone;

d. for multiple temperature zones;

i. installing a liner in the interior space;

ii. installing an air chute comprising thermally conductive material from at or near the evaporator to at or near the top of the liner;

iii. adding a plurality of dispensing mechanisms distributed vertically in the interior space except for a vertical dispensing space;

iv. installing a thermal barrier that blocks air flow in the air chute and between each of the multiple temperature zones in the interior space except for the vertical dispensing space but maintains a heat conduction path through the thermally conductive material;

v. installing an air circulator for circulating air into a bottom-most temperature zone of the multiple temperature zones from at or near the evaporator through a portion of the chute at the bottom-most temperature zone;

vi. installing an air circulator for circulating air into each higher temperature zone of the multiple temperature zones from inside a portion of the chute at each higher temperature zone;

vii. so that temperature in the higher temperature zones can be cooled by conduction of heat through the thermally conductive material of the air chute and by natural stratification within the interior space.

7. The vending machine of claim 6 further comprising installing a selectively controllable heater in at least one of the higher temperature zones.

8. The vending machine of claim 6, further comprising installing:

a. a programmable controller;

b. a temperature sensor in each temperature zone operatively connected to the controller;

c. a fan associated with each temperature zone operatively connected to the controller;

d. so that temperature in each temperature zone can be selectively controlled by programming of the controller.

9. The vending machine of claim 8 wherein the programming takes into account one or more of the following factors:

a. heat loads in the cabinet;

b. ambient temperature;

d. desired temperature range for a temperature zone.

10. The vending machine of claim 9 comprising two temperature zones with the bottom zone having a temperature range conducive to frozen food and the other zone conducive to either cold food or higher temperature.

11. The vending machine of claim 9 comprising three temperature zones with the bottom zone having a temperature range conducive to frozen food, an adjacent higher second zone conducive to either cold food, and an adjacent higher third zone conducive to fresh food or higher temperature.

12. The vending machine of claim 11 wherein:

a. the temperature range conducive to frozen food is below 32°

F.;

b. the temperature range conducive to cold food is approximately 35°

-40°

F.;

c. the temperature range conducive to higher temperature is approximately 50°

-70°

F.
