1. An apparatus for providing automated vending of vendible items comprising:

  • a. a vending machine cabinet defining an interior product bay for vendible products, the product bay having a top and a bottom and comprising a vendible product inventory zone and a vertical dispensing zone along a side of the vendible product inventory zone and between the top and bottom of the product bay;

    b. dispenser mechanisms that can be actuated by selection of a customer and for holding and dispensing selected vendible products into the vertical dispensing zone, the dispenser mechanisms distributed between the top and bottom of the vendible product inventory zone of the interior space;

    c. a refrigeration unit including an evaporator under the bottom of the product bay;

    d. an inner liner material adapted to either be continuous around substantially the whole product bay in a single temperature zone mode or include at least one thermal break between each of plural temperature zones between the top and bottom in the product bay to deter thermal conduction through the liner in a multiple temperature zone mode;

    e. a channel or duct vertically along the product bay, the channel or duct being enclosed from at or near the evaporator under the bottom of the product bay to an opening at or near the top of the product bay in the single temperature zone mode, or divided into segments separated by thermally insulated material extending across the channel or duct and the vendible product inventory zone of the product bay but not the vertical dispensing zone to define two or more temperature zones within the product bay in the multiple temperature zone mode;

    f. at least one opening to the duct in each zone;

    g. a fan to circulate air in each temperature zone including along at least a portion of the channel or duct that is in the temperature zone;

    h. so that a continuous unobstructed vertical dispensing zone is maintained for dispensing vendible products from any of the dispensers in the vendible product inventory zone while temperature can be selectively controlled for each temperature zone whether a single zone or plural temperature zones.
