Abstract

A dual-mode router for conveying process communication packets across a plurality of distinct wireless process communication networks is provided. The router includes wireless communication circuitry and a controller coupled to the wireless communication circuitry. The wireless communication circuitry is configured to interact with signals from each of the plurality of distinct wireless process communication networks. The controller is configured to adapt process communication packets from a first distinct wireless process communication network for transmission over a second distinct wireless process communication network. Methods for configuring the distinct wireless process communication networks and relaying process packets over the distinct wireless process communication networks are also provided.

Claims

1. A process communication system comprising:

an International Society of Automation (ISA) 100.11a wireless process communication network;

a first system manager which at least one of configures, controls and monitors the ISA 100.11a wireless process communication network;

a WirelessHART®

process communication network;

a second system manager which at least one of configures, controls and monitors the WirelessHART®

process communication network; and

wherein the first and second system managers are configured to operated based upon a coordinated system management function.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the first and second system managers provide collision avoidance between the ISA 100.11a and the Wireless HART®

process communication networks.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the first and second system managers coordinate 16 bit address assignment of field devices so that addresses in the IEEE802.15.4 MAC header may be used to identify a packet on one of a plurality of distinct wireless process control networks.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the first and second system managers coordinate the selection of a plurality of unique Personal Area Network (PAN) identifiers for each distinct wireless process control network such that the PAN identifier(s) in the IEEE802.15.4 MAC header can be used to identify the distinct wireless process control network.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the first and second system managers coordinate graph IDs across each of the ISA 100.11a and the Wireless HART®

process communication networks.

6. The system of claim 1 including:

a plurality of distinct wireless process communication networks including the ISA 100.11a wireless process communication network and the WirelessHART®

process communication network;

a plurality of devices with dual-mode router functionality;

at least one field device configured to communicate on at least one of the distinct wireless process communication networks; and

a coordinated system manager adapted to provide at least one function of configuring, controlling, and monitoring of the plurality of distinct wireless process communication networks.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the system supports communication from the field device on a first distinct wireless process communication network communicating through a second distinct wireless process communication network to a host application of the field device'"'"'s process control system.

8. The system of claim 6 wherein the system supports communication from the field device on a first distinct wireless process communication network communicating through a second distinct wireless process communication network to a field device also on the first distinct wireless process communication network.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the first and second system manages communicate with each other to implement the coordinated system management function.

10. A dual-mode communication device for conveying process communication packets across a plurality of distinct wireless process communication networks comprising an International Society of Automation (ISA) 100.11a wireless communication process network and a WirelessHART®

process communication network, the device comprising;

wireless radio frequency communication circuitry configured to interact with signals from each of the plurality of distinct wireless process communication networks comprising the International Society of Automation (ISA) 100.11a wireless communication process network and the Wireless HART®

process communication network;

a controller coupled to the wireless radio frequency communication circuitry, the controller being configured to receive wireless process communication packets for each of the plurality of distinct wireless process communication networks comprising the International Society of Automation (ISA) 100.11a wireless communication process network and the Wireless HART®

process communication network.

11. The dual-mode communication device of claim 10 wherein the controller is configured to generate wireless process communication packets for each of the plurality of distinct wireless process communication networks.

12. The dual-mode communication device of claim 10 wherein the device is operably coupled to a plant network.

13. The dual-mode communication device of claim 10 wherein the device is a dual-mode access point.

14. The dual-mode communication device of claim 10 wherein the device is embodied within a wireless gateway device.

15. A method of transporting wireless process communication packets across a plurality of distinct wireless process communication networks, the method comprising:

receiving a wireless process communication packet from a first distinct wireless process communication network;

determining is a size of the received wireless process communication packet exceeds a maximum packet size for a second wireless process communication network;

selectively breaking the received wireless process communication packet into a plurality of fragmented packets, where each of the fragmented packets has a size that does not exceed the maximum packet size for the second wireless process communication network;

transporting the plurality of fragmented packets over the second wireless process communication network; and

wherein the distinct wireless communication networks comprise International Society of Automation (ISA) 100.11a and the Wireless HART®

process communication networks.

The method of claim 15 and further comprising assembling the plurality of fragmented packets into a single packet after transmission over the second distinct wireless process communication network, wherein the single packet is in accordance with a protocol of the first wireless process communication network.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein the first wireless process communication network is a WirelessHART®

network.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the second wireless process communication network is an ISA100.11a network.

19. A method interacting with multiple distinct wireless process communication networks comprising an International Society of Automation (ISA) 100.11a process communication network and a Wireless HART®

process communication networks, the method comprising;

receiving a process packet through wireless radio frequency communication circuitry;

processing the process packet to determine a distinct wireless process communication network from which the process packet originated and a distinct wireless process communication network for which data in the process packet is destined, wherein the networks comprise the International Society of Automation (ISA) 100.11a wireless communication process network and the Wireless HART®

process communication network; and

selectively relaying the packet based on the processing.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the process packet is received from a ISA 100.11a process communication network.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein the step of processing the packet comprises examining a source route of the packet.

22. The method of claim 20 wherein the step of processing the packet comprises examining a graph ID of the packet.

23. The method of claim 19 wherein the process packet is received from the wireless HART®

process communication network.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein the step of processing comprises examining a source route of the process packet.

25. The method of claim 23 wherein the step of processing comprises coordinating a graph ID of the process packet.

26. The method of claim 19 including fragmenting the process packet prior to relaying the process packet.

27. The method of claim 19 including selectively setting a source route flag prior to relaying the packet.

28. The method of claim 19 including decrementing a time-to-live (TTL) field prior to relaying the packet.

29. The method of claim 19 including obtaining an origin address and a final address from the received packet.

30. The method of claim 19 including selectively removing portions of a header of the process packet prior to relaying the process packet.

31. The method of claim 19 including setting a proxy flag prior to relaying the packet.

32. The method of claim 19 wherein the packet includes a UDP payload.

33. The method of claim 19 wherein the packet includes security encrypted data.

34. The method of claim 19 including checking message integrity of the packet prior to relying the packet.

35. A dual-mode router implementing the method of claim 19.
