Delivery system for a self-expanding device for placement in a bodily lumen
First Claim
1. A system comprising:
- an elongate body having distal and proximal ends and a body region on the distal end of the body;
a self-expanding device configured for placing in a lumen positioned over the body region;
a sheath positioned over the device having a pull region on the circumference of the distal end of the sheath in which the distal end of the sheath tapers in so as to provide an inwardly tapered distal end to the system;
anda pull element that connects to the sheath at the pull region and that extends from the distal end of the sheath, along the body region, between the device and the sheath and that emerges from the proximal end of the sheath,wherein the wall of the sheath has a line of weakness that extends lengthwise along the sheath and in which the distal end of the line defines a tear initiation point on the distal end of the sheath adjacent the pull region,andfurther comprising;
a proximal handle in which the pull element extends through or along the device until the proximal end of the pull element connects to the handle;
a second pull element that connects to the sheath at the pull region circumferentially opposite the first pull element and line of weakness and that extends from the distal end of the sheath, along the body region, between the device and the sheath and that emerges from the proximal end of the sheath;
a pull wire having a proximal end connected to a handle located at the proximal end of the body;
an undulating portion connected to the proximal end of the second pull element;
anda coupling mechanism positioned coaxially around the body proximal of the sheath connected to the proximal end of the first pull element, to the proximal end of the undulating portion, and to the distal end of the pull wire.

Abstract
A delivery system for a self-expanding device for placement in a bodily lumen, the system comprising a sheath that confines the device to a radially compact delivery disposition until the device is to be released into the lumen, the system having an elongate pull element to be pulled proximally from its proximal end, which pull element is arranged radially inside the sheath for pulling preferentially on a pull zone on the circumference of the distal end of the sheath, thereby to tear the sheath progressively along a tear line running the length of the sheath, starting at the distal end of the sheath, to release the device from the confining effect of the sheath, progressively, beginning at the distal end of the device and wherein the sheath is of polyethylene-terephthalate, cold drawn along its long axis, and in that the distal end of the sheath tapers inwardly to provide an inwardly tapered distal end of the system.
