Abstract

Apparatus configured for high voltage power line maintenance and repair. In some embodiments, a power tool has a housing that encloses an electrical load and a control electronics module, the housing having a first shield layer of conductive material and being open at one end to receive a removable battery pack. A conductive boot removably attaches to the housing to surround the battery pack, the boot having a second shield layer of conductive material which, when installed onto the boot, combines with the first shield layer to form a combined shield that nominally encloses the power tool and the boot. A locking feature interlocks the boot to the housing. In further embodiments, the power tool is supported at a distal end of an insulated hot stick. A user interface is supplied at a proximal end of the hot stick to selectively activate the power tool.

Claims

1. A power tool assembly comprising:

a power tool comprising a housing which encloses at least an electrical load and a control electronics circuit to activate the electrical load, the housing comprising a first shield as a layer of conductive material that nominally encloses the electrical load and the control electronics circuit, the first shield open at a battery pack receiving slot of the housing, wherein an antenna slot extends through the layer of conductive material forming the first shield in the housing, the antenna slot sized to facilitate passage of wireless control signals within a predetermined frequency range from a remote user interface to the control electronics circuit, the wireless control signals operating to selectively activate the electrical load;

a removable battery pack mateable with the battery pack receiving slot of the housing to supply electrical power for use by the electrical load and the control electronics circuit; and

a removable boot adapted to surround the removeable battery pack upon engagement with the housing, the boot comprising a second shield as a layer of conductive material which, which installed onto the boot, combines with the first shield to form a combined shield that nominally encloses the power tool and the boot, the boot comprising at least one locking feature that engages a corresponding feature of the housing to mechanically secure the boot to the housing to retain the boot in said engagement with the housing.

2. The power tool assembly of claim 1, further comprising an insulative hot stick having opposing proximal and distal ends, the power tool supported by the distal end.

3. The power tool assembly of claim 2, wherein the insulative hot stick comprises a user interface adjacent the proximal end, the user interface comprising at least one actuator configured for actuation by a human user supporting the hot stick to selectively activate the electrical load.

4. The power tool assembly of claim 1, wherein the electrical load comprises an electric motor.

5. The power tool assembly of claim 1, wherein the boot is formed of a flexible material with a layer of electrically insulative material affixed to the layer of conductive material forming the second shield.

6. The power tool assembly of claim 1, wherein the locking feature comprises a tab and slot arrangement.

7. The power tool assembly of claim 1, further comprising a suppression circuit disposed between the first and second shields.

8. The power tool assembly of claim 1, wherein the antenna slot is characterized as an opening having a minimum length of nominally 62.5 millimeters, mm.

The power tool assembly of claim 1, further comprising said user interface having a communication circuit that communicates with the electronic control circuit via a communication link to selectively activate the electrical load using wireless control signals within a predetermined frequency range that pass through the antenna slot.

10. The power tool assembly of claim 9, wherein the communication link is a wireless radio frequency (RF) link.

11. The power tool assembly of claim 10, wherein the wireless RF link operates as a spread spectrum frequency hopping digital signal.

12. The power tool assembly of claim 10, wherein the RF link nominally operates at a frequency of about 2.4 GHz or above.

The power tool assembly of claim 1, wherein the power tool is characterized as a selected one of an impact driver, a drill, a saw, a camera, a crimper or a sensor adapted for servicing a power line carrying an alternating current (AC) voltage in a distribution range of from about 480 volts (V) to about 50,000V nominal phase to phase.

The power tool assembly of claim 1, wherein the power tool is characterized as a selected one of an impact driver, a drill, a saw, a camera, a crimper or a sensor adapted for servicing a power line carrying an alternating current (AC) voltage in a distribution range of from about 50,000 volts (V) to about 1,000,000V nominal phase to phase.

15. A power tool assembly adapted for use adjacent a high voltage power line, the power tool assembly comprising an insulative hot stick comprising opposing proximal and distal ends, the distal end supporting a power tool assembly, the proximal end supporting a user interface having at least one user depressible switch to activate the power tool assembly via a communication link, the power tool assembly comprising a power tool having a housing which encloses at least an electrical load and a control electronics circuit to activate the electrical load responsive to the user interface, the housing comprising a first shield as a layer of conductive material that nominally encloses the electrical load and the control electronics circuit, the first shield open at a battery pack receiving slot of the housing, the power tool assembly further comprising a removable battery pack mateable with the battery pack receiving slot of the housing to supply electrical power for use by the electrical load and the control electronics circuit, the power tool assembly further comprising a removable protective boot adapted to surround the removable battery pack upon engagement with the housing, the boot comprising a second shield as a layer of conductive material which, which installed onto the boot, combines with the first shield to form a combined shield that nominally encloses the power tool and the boot, the boot comprising at least one locking feature that engages a corresponding feature of the housing to mechanically secure the boot to the housing to retain the boot in said engagement with the housing, wherein the communication link uses wireless control signals within a predetermined frequency range that pass through an antenna slot extending through the layer of conductive material forming the first shield in the housing.

16. The power tool assembly of claim 15, wherein the power tool comprises an impact driver.

17. The power tool assembly of claim 15, wherein the power tool comprises a saw.

18. The power tool assembly of claim 15, wherein the power tool comprises a crimper.

19. The power tool assembly of claim 15, wherein the power tool comprises a sensor.

20. The power tool assembly of claim 15, wherein the power tool comprises a camera.

21. The power tool assembly of claim 15, wherein the electrical load comprises an electric motor.

22. The power tool assembly of claim 15, wherein the boot is formed of a flexible material with a layer of electrically insulative material affixed to the layer of conductive material forming the second shield.

23. The power tool assembly of claim 15, wherein the boot has an outer surface on which is printed human readable indicia comprising a warning message to the user of the power tool assembly associated with a high voltage.

24. The power tool assembly of claim 15, wherein the communication link is a spread spectrum wireless radio frequency (RF) signal path.

25. The power tool assembly of claim 15, further comprising a lockout feature that prevents activation of the electrical load by the control electronics circuit responsive to absence of the boot.

26. The power tool assembly of claim 15, integrated into an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

27. The power tool assembly of claim 15, integrated into a mobile line robot.

28. A power tool assembly comprising:

a power tool comprising a housing which encloses at least an electrical load and a control electronics circuit to activate the electrical load, the housing comprising a first shield as a layer of conductive material that nominally encloses the electrical load and the control electronics circuit, the first shield open at a battery pack receiving slot of the housing;

a removable battery pack mateable with the battery pack receiving slot of the housing to supply electrical power for use by the electrical load and the control electronics circuit; and

a removable boot adapted to surround the removeable battery pack upon engagement with the housing, the boot comprising a second shield as a layer of conductive material which, which installed onto the boot, combines with the first shield to form a combined shield that nominally encloses the power tool and the boot, the boot comprising at least one locking feature that engages a corresponding feature of the housing to mechanically secure the boot to the housing to retain the boot in said engagement with the housing; and

a user interface having a communication circuit that communicates with the electronic control circuit via a communication link to selectively activate the electrical load using wireless control signals within a predetermined frequency range that pass through an antenna slot extending through the layer of conductive material forming the first shield in the housing.

29. The power tool assembly of claim 28, further comprising an insulative hot stick having opposing proximal and distal ends, the power tool supported by the distal end, the user interface supported by the proximal end.

30. The power tool assembly of claim 28, wherein the communication link is a spread spectrum wireless radio frequency (RF) signal path.
