Abstract

A method of treating a subsurface formation includes circulating at least one molten salt through at least one conduit of a conduit-in-conduit heater located in the formation to heat hydrocarbons in the formation to at least a mobilization temperature of the hydrocarbons. At least some of the hydrocarbons are produced from the formation. An electrical resistance of at least one of the conduits of the conduit-in-conduit heater is assessed to assess a presence of a leak in at least one of the conduits.

Claims

1. A method of treating a subsurface formation, comprising:

circulating a heated carbonate molten salt through at least one conduit of a conduit-in-conduit heater positioned in a wellbore located in the formation;

heating hydrocarbons in at least a portion of the formation with heat from the circulating heated carbonate molten salt, wherein the hydrocarbons are heated to a mobilization temperature of the hydrocarbons; and

producing at least some of the heated hydrocarbons from the formation.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the heated carbonate molten salt comprises sodium, potassium, and lithium carbonate salts.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the heated carbonate molten salt has a melting point of at least 390°

C.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the heated carbonate molten salt has a melting point of about 600°

C.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the heated carbonate molten salt comprises a eutectic mixture of sodium, potassium and lithium carbonate salts.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising allowing at least a portion of the heated carbonate molten salt to flow through openings in the conduit-in-conduit heater and into the formation.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the openings in the conduit-in-conduit heater are formed by degradation over time of portions of the conduit-in-conduit heater by the heated carbonate molten salt.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the openings in the conduit-in-conduit heater comprise coverings that degrade over time in the presence of the heated carbonate molten salt.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the wellbore comprises an open wellbore.

10. A method of treating a subsurface formation, comprising:

circulating a heated carbonate molten salt through at least one conduit of a conduit-in-conduit heater positioned in a wellbore located in the formation;

heating hydrocarbons in at least a first portion of the formation with heat from the circulating heated carbonate molten salt, wherein the hydrocarbons are heated to a mobilization temperature of the hydrocarbons;

allowing at least a portion of the carbonate molten salt to flow through openings in the conduit-in-conduit heater and into a second portion of the formation;

allowing at least some carbonate molten salt in the second portion to cool and at least partially solidify in the second portion, wherein the solidified carbonate molten salt forms a permeable heater in the second portion that surrounds a portion of the conduit-in-conduit heater;

providing at least some additional heated molten carbonate salt through the permeable heater to heat at least one additional portion of the formation, wherein the at least one additional portion is adjacent the permeable heater; and

producing at least some of the heated hydrocarbons from the formation.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the heated carbonate molten salt has a melting point of at least 390°

C.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising forming the openings in the conduit-in-conduit heater by degrading portions of the conduit-in-conduit heater with the heated carbonate molten salt over time.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the openings in the conduit-in-conduit heater comprise openings with coverings that degrade over time in the presence of the heated carbonate molten salt.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the permeable heater allows molten carbonate salt to flow through the permeable heater.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the permeable heater has a diameter greater than a diameter of the conduit-in-conduit heater.

16. The method of claim 10, wherein the permeable heater has a diameter of about 2 times a diameter of the conduit-in-conduit heater.

17. The method of claim 10, wherein the conduit-in-conduit heater comprises an abandoned circulation system located in the formation.

18. The method of claim 10, wherein the permeable heater is formed by performing a cycle of:

allowing at least some molten carbonate salt to cool and at least partially solidify in the second portion;

providing additional heated molten carbonate salt into the second portion to melt at least some of the solidified molten carbonate salt; and

allowing at least some of the melted molten carbonate salt to cool and solidify in the second portion.

19. The method of claim 10, wherein the wellbore comprises an open wellbore.
