Volumetric heads-up display with dynamic focal plane
First Claim
1. A heads-up display system for displaying graphic elements in view of a user while the user views an environment disposed at a position spaced from the heads-up display system, the heads-up display system comprising a plurality of projectors each projecting a graphic element on a unique focal plane in the view of the user while the user views the environment, each unique focal plane being disposed in the environment, wherein the plurality of projectors comprise:
- a first projector projecting a first graphic element on a first focal plane in view of the user while the user views the environment, the first focal plane oriented substantially perpendicularly to a line-of-sight of the user; and
a second projector projecting a second graphic element on a second focal plane in view of the user while the user views the environment, the second focal plane oriented substantially perpendicularly to the line-of-sight of the user and being different than the first focal plane, wherein the first projector projects moves the first focal plane in a direction of the line-of-sight of the user, and the second projector moves the second focal plane in the direction of the line-of-sight of the user independently of the first focal plane.

Abstract
A heads-up display device for displaying graphic elements in view of a user while the user views an environment through a display screen. The heads-up display device includes at least one projector that projects a graphic element on a frontal focal plane in view of the user while the user views the environment through the display screen, and at least one projector that projects a graphic element on a ground-parallel focal plane in view of the user while the user views the environment through the display screen. The projector that projects the graphic element on the frontal focal plane is mounted on an actuator that linearly moves the projector so as to cause the frontal focal plane to move in a direction of a line-of-sight of the user. The projector that projects the ground-parallel focal plane is fixedly arranged such that the ground-parallel focal plane is static.

-
a first projector projecting a first graphic element on a first focal plane in view of the user while the user views the environment, the first focal plane being movable in a direction of a line-of-sight of the user and oriented substantially perpendicularly to a line-of-sight of the user; a second projector projecting a second graphic element on a second focal plane in view of the user while the user views the environment, the second focal plane oriented substantially parallel to a ground surface and below the line-of-sight of the user; a third projector projecting a third graphic element on a third focal plane in view of the user while the user views the environment, the third focal plane being movable in the direction of the line-of-sight of the user independently from the first focal plane, and oriented substantially perpendicularly to the line-of-sight of the user; and a fourth projector projecting a fourth graphic element on a fourth focal plane in view of the user while the user views the environment, the fourth focal plane oriented substantially parallel to the ground surface and above the line-of-sight of the user.

12. A controller for controlling a heads-up display device that displays graphic elements in view of a user while the user views an environment disposed at a position spaced from and in front of the heads-up display device, the heads-up display device including a projector system adapted to project a plurality of graphic elements on a plurality of focal planes in view of the user while the user views the environment, with each of the plurality of focal planes being disposed in the environment,
wherein the controller is programmed to control the heads-up display device to display a first graphic element on a first focal plane oriented substantially perpendicularly to a line-of-sight of the user, and a second graphic element on a second focal plane that is different than the first focal plane, wherein the controller controls the heads-up display device to move the first focal plane in a direction of the line-of-sight of the user, and wherein the controller is programmed to determine a target first graphic element position, and control the heads-up display device to move the first focal plane to the target first graphic element position.
