1. An intervertebral fusion cage, comprising:

  • a) a first component having an outside surface configured to engage an upper vertebral endplate, an interior surface opposite the outside surface along a first direction, and a tapered first distal end, wherein the first component defines a recess that extends into the interior surface toward the outside surface;

    b) a second component having first and second opposed surfaces that are opposite each other along the first direction, and a second distal end, wherein the second component includes a projection that extends from the first surface along the first direction away from the second surface,wherein the first surface is slidable along the interior surface in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction such that the second distal end travels toward the tapered first distal end until the projection is received in the recess so as to impede the first surface from further sliding along the interior surface in the second direction, andwherein the projection defines first and second ends that are offset from each other a linear distance along a third direction that is greater than each of a height of the projection along the first direction and a width of the projection along the second direction, and the third direction is perpendicular to each of the first and second directions.
