Abstract

A wearable defibrillation system includes an output device and a motion sensor. The output device emits a sound or a vibration for the patient, who responds by deliberately tapping the system. The motion sensor registers the tapping, and interprets it as a reply from the patient. The reply can be that the patient is conscious, or convey data that the patient enters by tapping the right number of times, or that the patient wants attention, and so on. Since the patient does not need direct access to the wearable defibrillation system for tapping it, he or she can wear it under their other garments, which helps preserve their dignity and privacy.

Claims

1. A wearable defibrillator system, comprising:

a support structure for wearing by a patient;

electrodes for delivering a charge to the patient while the patient is wearing the support structure;

an output device for emitting an alarming human-perceptible indication when the charge is intended to be delivered imminently; and

a motion sensor coupled to the support structure, the motion sensor configured to detect motion of the patient while the patient responds to the query, the charge delivery being canceled if the motion sensor detects a motion within a react interval that starts when the alarming human-perceptible indication is emitted.

2. The system of claim 1, in which

the output device includes a speaker.

3. The system of claim 1, in which

the output device includes a vibration mechanism.

4. The system of claim 1, in which

the output device further emits a count-down human-perceptible indication that communicates a duration of the react interval.

12. The system of claim 1, in which

the patient wears one or more further garments in a manner that the one or more further garments completely cover the motion sensor, and the motion sensor is configured to detect motion of the patient while the one or more further garments completely cover the motion sensor.

5. A method for a wearable defibrillator system that is worn by a patient, the wearable defibrillator system configured to work with a motion sensor that is configured to detect motion of the patient while the patient responds to an alarming human-perceptible indication, the method comprising:

emitting an alarming human-perceptible indication signifying that administering a defibrillation shock is imminent; and

canceling the administration of the defibrillation shock if a motion is detected by the motion sensor in response to the patient responding to the alarming human-perceptible indication during a react interval that starts when the alarming human-perceptible indication is emitted,

else administering the defibrillation shock to the patient imminently.

6. The method of claim 5, in which

the alarming human-perceptible indication includes an emitted sound.

7. The method of claim 5, in which

the alarming human-perceptible indication includes an emitted vibration.

8. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

emitting a count-down human-perceptible indication that communicates a duration of the react interval.

13. The method of claim 5, in which

the patient wears one or more further garments in a manner that the one or more further garments completely cover the motion sensor, and

the administration of the defibrillation shock is canceled if the motion is detected by the motion sensor while the one or more further garments completely cover the motion sensor.

9. A method for a patient, comprising:

wearing a support structure of a wearable defibrillator system that includes a motion sensor, the motion sensor configured to detect motion of the patient while the patient responds to an alarming human-perceptible indication;

perceiving an alarming indication that the wearable defibrillator system will deliver a shock imminently; and

either tapping deliberately proximately to the support structure so as to cause the motion sensor to move during a react time interval starting when the alarming indication is perceived,

or else receiving the shock imminently.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

perceiving a count-down indication that communicates a duration of the react interval, and

in which the support structure is tapped during the react time interval as guided by the count-down human-perceptible indication.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

wearing one or more further garments in a manner that the one or more further garments completely cover the motion sensor, while thus tapping deliberately proximately to the support structure.
