1. A method for generating a three-dimensional object suspended in a powder bed, comprising:

  • (a) providing a powder bed in an enclosure, wherein the powder bed comprises individual particles formed of a powder material selected from the group consisting of an elemental metal, metal alloy, ceramic, and an allotrope of elemental carbon;

    (b) generating the three-dimensional object from a portion of the powder bed, wherein upon generation the three-dimensional object is suspended anchorlessly in the powder bed; and

    (c) leveling an exposed surface of the powder bed, wherein during the leveling, the three-dimensional object suspended anchorlessly in the powder bed is displaced horizontally by about 300 micrometers or less.
