Abstract

Implanted pulse generators with reduced power consumption via signal strength-duration characteristics, and associated systems and methods are disclosed. A representative method for treating a patient in accordance with the disclosed technology includes receiving an input corresponding to an available voltage for an implanted medical device and identifying a signal delivery parameter value of an electrical signal based on a correlation between values of the signal delivery parameter and signal deliver amplitudes. The signal deliver parameter can include at least one of pulse width or duty cycle. The method can further include delivering an electrical therapy signal to the patient at the identified signal delivery parameter value using a voltage within a margin of the available voltage.

Claims

1. A method for treating a patient, comprising:

receiving an input corresponding to an available voltage for an implanted medical device;

identifying a signal delivery parameter value of an electrical signal based on a correlation between values of the signal delivery parameter and signal delivery amplitudes, wherein the signal delivery parameter includes at least one of pulse width or duty cycle, wherein the identified signal delivery parameter value is increased in response to a decrease in available voltage; and

delivering an electrical therapy signal to the patient at the identified signal delivery parameter value using a voltage within a margin of the available voltage.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the signal delivery parameter is pulse width.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the signal delivery parameter is duty cycle.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the available voltage is an output voltage of a battery that provides power for the electrical therapy signal.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving at least one input corresponding to a target therapy amplitude and a target pulse width;

determining that the available voltage is insufficient to supply a therapy signal at the target therapy amplitude and the target pulse width;

identifying an updated therapy amplitude less than the target therapy amplitude;

based at least in part on the updated therapy amplitude and the correlation, identifying an updated pulse width greater than the target pulse width; and

delivering the electrical therapy signal to the patient at the updated therapy amplitude and the updated pulse width.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the correlation is patient-specific correlation, and wherein the method further comprises establishing the correlation.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein establishing the correlation includes establishing the correlation by producing paresthesia in the patient, and wherein delivering the electrical therapy signal does not produce paresthesia in the patient.

8. A method for treating pain in a patient, comprising:

establishing a patient-specific correlation between amplitudes and pulse widths by identifying at least one pulse width/amplitude pair that produces a detectable result in the patient;

receiving at least one input corresponding to a target therapy amplitude, pulse width and frequency;

determining an available voltage of a battery-powered implanted medical device;

determining whether the available voltage is sufficient to direct a therapy signal to the patient at the target therapy amplitude, pulse width and frequency; and

if the available voltage is not sufficient;

determining an updated therapy amplitude and, based on the patient-specific correlation, an updated pulse width; and

delivering an electrical therapy signal to the patient at the updated therapy amplitude and the updated pulse width; and

if the available voltage is sufficient;

delivering an electrical therapy signal to the patient at the target amplitude and pulse width.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the detectable result is a non-therapeutic result, and wherein the method further comprises applying a correction factor to the patient-specific correlation to account for an expected difference between the non-therapeutic result and a target therapeutic result.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the non-therapeutic result includes producing paresthesia in the patient and wherein the target therapeutic result includes producing pain relief without paresthesia in the patient.

11. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

determining if the updated pulse width can be delivered at the target frequency; and

if the updated pulse width cannot be delivered at the target frequency, updating the target frequency.

12. The method of claim 8 wherein establishing the patient-specific correlation includes using the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair to determine which of a plurality of pulse width/amplitude correlations applies to the patient.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is one of multiple pulse width/amplitude pairs used to determine which of the plurality of pulse width/amplitude correlations applies to the patient.

14. The method of claim 8 wherein establishing the patient-specific correlation includes using data from other patients.

15. The method of claim 8 wherein identifying the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is based at least in part on producing paresthesia in the patient with a signal having the pulse width and amplitude of the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair.

16. The method of claim 8 wherein identifying the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is based at least in part on producing pain relief without producing paresthesia in the patient, with a signal having the pulse width and amplitude of the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair.

17. The method of claim 8 wherein identifying the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is based at least in part on producing an evoked potential in the patient with a signal having the pulse width and amplitude of the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair.

18. The method of claim 8 wherein determining the updated therapy amplitude is based at least in part on the available voltage and on an impedance of a circuit via which the electrical therapy signal is delivered.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising determining the impedance by:

delivering an electrical therapy signal at the target amplitude and pulse width;

determining a voltage across the circuit; and

determining the impedance based on the target amplitude and the voltage across the circuit.

20. A patient therapy system, comprising:

a pulse generator programmed with instructions for delivering an electrical therapy signal to a patient at a frequency of from 1.5 kHz to 100 kHz;

a processor operatively coupled to the pulse generator and programmed with instructions that, when executed;

receive an input corresponding to an available voltage for the pulse generator;

identify a signal delivery parameter value of an electrical signal based on a correlation between values of the signal delivery parameter and signal delivery amplitudes, wherein the signal delivery parameter includes at least one of pulse width or duty cycle; and

direct the pulse generator to deliver an electrical therapy signal at the identified signal delivery parameter value using a voltage within a margin of the available voltage.

21. The system of claim 20, further comprising a signal delivery element coupled to the pulse generator to deliver the electrical therapy signal to a patient.

22. The system of claim 20 wherein the processor and the pulse generator are housed in a patient-implantable device.

23. The system of claim 20 wherein the pulse generator is housed in a patient-implantable device, and the processor is housed in an external device.

24. The system of claim 20, further comprising a computer-readable medium coupled to the processor, and wherein the instructions are carried by the computer-readable medium.

25. The system of claim 20 wherein the pulse generator is programmed with instructions for delivering the electrical therapy signal at a pulse width of from 10 microseconds to 333 microseconds.

26. The system of claim 20 wherein the processor is programmed with instructions that, when executed:

receive at least one input corresponding to a target therapy amplitude and a target pulse width;

determine that the available voltage is insufficient to supply a therapy signal at the target therapy amplitude and the target pulse width;

identify an updated therapy amplitude less than the target therapy amplitude;

based at least in part on the updated therapy amplitude and the correlation, identify an updated pulse width greater than the target pulse width; and

deliver the electrical therapy signal to the patient at the updated therapy amplitude and the updated pulse width.

27. A patient therapy system, comprising:

an implantable housing;

a pulse generator carried within the housing and programmed with instructions for delivering an electrical therapy signal to a patient at a frequency of from 1.5 kHz to 100 kHz;

an implantable signal delivery element coupled to the pulse generator;

a battery carried within the housing and coupled to the pulse generator to provide power for the electrical therapy signal; and

a processor carried within the housing and operatively coupled to the pulse generator, the processor being programmed with instructions that, when executed;

receive an input corresponding to an available voltage from the battery;

identify a pulse width of an electrical signal based on a correlation between pulse widths and signal delivery amplitudes; and

direct the pulse generator to deliver an electrical therapy signal at the identified pulse width value using a voltage within a margin of the available voltage.

28. The system of claim 27 wherein the processor is programmed with instructions that, when executed:

receive at least one input corresponding to a target current amplitude and a target pulse width;

determine that the available voltage is insufficient to supply a therapy signal at the target current amplitude and the target pulse width;

determine an impedance of a circuit via which the electrical therapy signal is delivered, the circuit including the patient;

based at least in part on the impedance and the available voltage, determine an updated current amplitude less than the target current amplitude;

based on the updated current amplitude and the correlation, identify an updated pulse width greater than the target pulse width.

29. The system of claim 27 wherein the pulse generator is programmed with instructions for delivering the electrical therapy signal at a pulse width of from 10 microseconds to 333 microseconds.

30. A system for treating a patient, comprising:

means for receiving an input corresponding to an available voltage for an implanted medical device;

means for identifying a signal delivery parameter value of an electrical signal based on a correlation between values of the signal delivery parameter and signal delivery amplitudes, wherein the signal delivery parameter includes at least one of pulse width or duty cycle; and

means for delivering an electrical therapy signal to the patient at a frequency of from 1.5 kHz to 100 kHz, and the identified signal delivery parameter value using a voltage within a margin of the available voltage.

31. The system of claim 30 wherein the signal delivery parameter is pulse width.

32. The system of claim 30 wherein the signal delivery parameter is duty cycle.

33. The system of claim 30 wherein the available voltage is an output voltage of a battery that provides power for the electrical therapy signal.

34. The system of claim 30, further comprising:

means for receiving at least one input corresponding to a target therapy amplitude and a target pulse width;

means for determining that the available voltage is insufficient to supply a therapy signal at the target therapy amplitude and the target pulse width;

means for identifying an updated therapy amplitude less than the target therapy amplitude;

means for based at least in part on the updated therapy amplitude and the correlation, identifying an updated pulse width greater than the target pulse width; and

means for delivering the electrical therapy signal to the patient at the updated therapy amplitude and the updated pulse width.

35. The system of claim 30, wherein the correlation is patient-specific correlation, and wherein the method further comprises establishing the correlation.

36. The system of claim 35 wherein establishing the correlation includes establishing the correlation by producing paresthesia in the patient, and wherein delivering the electrical therapy signal does not produce paresthesia in the patient.

37. A system for treating pain in a patient, comprising:

means for establishing a patient-specific correlation between amplitudes and pulse widths by identifying at least one pulse width/amplitude pair that produces a detectable result in the patient;

means for receiving at least one input corresponding to a target therapy amplitude, pulse width and frequency;

means for determining an available voltage of a battery-powered implanted medical device;

means for determining whether the available voltage is sufficient to direct a therapy signal to the patient at the target therapy amplitude, pulse width and frequency; and

if the available voltage is not sufficient;

determining an updated therapy amplitude and, based on the patient-specific correlation, an updated pulse width; and

delivering an electrical therapy signal to the patient at the updated therapy amplitude and the updated pulse width; and

if the available voltage is sufficient;

delivering an electrical therapy signal to the patient at the target amplitude and pulse width, and a frequency of from 1.5 kHz to 100 kHz.

38. The system of claim 37 wherein the detectable result is a non-therapeutic result, and wherein the method further comprises applying a correction factor to the patient-specific correlation to account for an expected difference between the non-therapeutic result and a target therapeutic result.

39. The system of claim 38 wherein the non-therapeutic result includes producing paresthesia in the patient and wherein the target therapeutic result includes producing pain relief without paresthesia in the patient.

40. The system of claim 37, further comprising:

means for determining if the updated pulse width can be delivered at the target frequency; and

if the updated pulse width cannot be delivered at the target frequency, updating the target frequency.

41. The system of claim 37 wherein establishing the patient-specific correlation includes using the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair to determine which of a plurality of pulse width/amplitude correlations applies to the patient.

42. The system of claim 41 wherein the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is one of multiple pulse width/amplitude pairs used to determine which of the plurality of pulse width/amplitude correlations applies to the patient.

43. The system of claim 37 wherein establishing the patient-specific correlation includes using data from other patients.

44. The system of claim 37 wherein identifying the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is based at least in part on producing paresthesia in the patient with a signal having the pulse width and amplitude of the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair.

45. The system of claim 37 wherein identifying the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is based at least in part on producing pain relief without producing paresthesia in the patient, with a signal having the pulse width and amplitude of the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair.

46. The system of claim 37 wherein identifying the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is based at least in part on producing an evoked potential in the patient with a signal having the pulse width and amplitude of the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair.

47. The system of claim 37 wherein determining the updated therapy amplitude is based at least in part on the available voltage and on an impedance of a circuit via which the electrical therapy signal is delivered.

48. The system of claim 47, further comprising determining the impedance by:

means for delivering an electrical therapy signal at the target amplitude and pulse width;

means for determining a voltage across the circuit; and

means for determining the impedance based on the target amplitude and the voltage across the circuit.

49. A method for treating a patient, comprising:

programming a pulse generator to

receive an input corresponding to an available voltage for an implanted medical device;

identify a signal delivery parameter value of an electrical signal based on a correlation between values of the signal delivery parameter and signal delivery amplitudes, wherein the signal delivery parameter includes at least one of pulse width or duty cycle; and

deliver an electrical therapy signal to the patient at a frequency of from 1.5 kHz to 100 kHz and the identified signal delivery parameter value using a voltage within a margin of the available voltage.

50. The method of claim 49 wherein the signal delivery parameter is pulse width.

51. The method of claim 49 wherein the signal delivery parameter is duty cycle.

52. The method of claim 49 wherein the available voltage is an output voltage of a battery that provides power for the electrical therapy signal.

53. The method of claim 49, further comprising:

programming the pulse generator to;

receive at least one input corresponding to a target therapy amplitude and a target pulse width;

determine that the available voltage is insufficient to supply a therapy signal at the target therapy amplitude and the target pulse width;

identify an updated therapy amplitude less than the target therapy amplitude;

based at least in part on the updated therapy amplitude and the correlation, identify an updated pulse width greater than the target pulse width; and

deliver the electrical therapy signal to the patient at the updated therapy amplitude and the updated pulse width.

54. The method of claim 49, wherein the correlation is patient-specific correlation, and wherein the method further comprises establishing the correlation.

55. The method of claim 54 wherein establishing the correlation includes establishing the correlation by producing paresthesia in the patient, and wherein delivering the electrical therapy signal does not produce paresthesia in the patient.

56. A method for treating pain in a patient, comprising:

programming a pulse generator to;

establish a patient-specific correlation between amplitudes and pulse widths by identifying at least one pulse width/amplitude pair that produces a detectable result in the patient;

receive at least one input corresponding to a target therapy amplitude, pulse width and frequency;

determine an available voltage of a battery-powered implanted medical device;

determine whether the available voltage is sufficient to direct a therapy signal to the patient at the target therapy amplitude, pulse width and frequency; and

if the available voltage is not sufficient;

determine an updated therapy amplitude and, based on the patient-specific correlation, an updated pulse width; and

deliver an electrical therapy signal to the patient at the updated therapy amplitude and the updated pulse width; and

if the available voltage is sufficient;

deliver an electrical therapy signal to the patient at the target amplitude and pulse width.

57. The method of claim 56 wherein the detectable result is a non-therapeutic result, and wherein the method further comprises programming a pulse generator to apply a correction factor to the patient-specific correlation to account for an expected difference between the non-therapeutic result and a target therapeutic result.

58. The method of claim 57 wherein the non-therapeutic result includes producing paresthesia in the patient and wherein the target therapeutic result includes producing pain relief without paresthesia in the patient.

59. The method of claim 56, further comprising:

programming the pulse generator to;

determine if the updated pulse width can be delivered at the target frequency; and

if the updated pulse width cannot be delivered at the target frequency, update the target frequency.

60. The method of claim 56 wherein establishing the patient-specific correlation includes using the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair to determine which of a plurality of pulse width/amplitude correlations applies to the patient.

61. The method of claim 60 wherein the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is one of multiple pulse width/amplitude pairs used to determine which of the plurality of pulse width/amplitude correlations applies to the patient.

62. The method of claim 56 wherein establishing the patient-specific correlation includes using data from other patients.

63. The method of claim 56 wherein identifying the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is based at least in part on producing paresthesia in the patient with a signal having the pulse width and amplitude of the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair.

64. The method of claim 56 wherein identifying the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is based at least in part on producing pain relief without producing paresthesia in the patient, with a signal having the pulse width and amplitude of the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair.

65. The method of claim 56 wherein identifying the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair is based at least in part on producing an evoked potential in the patient with a signal having the pulse width and amplitude of the at least one pulse width/amplitude pair.

66. The method of claim 56 wherein determining the updated therapy amplitude is based at least in part on the available voltage and on an impedance of a circuit via which the electrical therapy signal is delivered.

67. The method of claim 66, further comprising:

programming the pulse generator to determine the impedance by;

delivering an electrical therapy signal at the target amplitude and pulse width;

determining a voltage across the circuit; and

determining the impedance based on the target amplitude and the voltage across the circuit.

68. A patient therapy system, comprising:

a pulse generator programmed with instructions for delivering an electrical therapy signal to a patient at a pulse width of from 10 microseconds to 333 microseconds;

a processor operatively coupled to the pulse generator and programmed with instructions that, when executed;

receive an input corresponding to an available voltage for the pulse generator;

identify a signal delivery parameter value of an electrical signal based on a correlation between values of the signal delivery parameter and signal delivery amplitudes, wherein the signal delivery parameter includes at least one of pulse width or duty cycle; and

direct the pulse generator to deliver an electrical therapy signal at the identified signal delivery parameter value using a voltage within a margin of the available voltage.

69. A patient therapy system, comprising:

an implantable housing;

a pulse generator carried within the housing and programmed with instructions for delivering an electrical therapy signal to a patient at a pulse width of from 10 microseconds to 333 microseconds;

an implantable signal delivery element coupled to the pulse generator;

a battery carried within the housing and coupled to the pulse generator to provide power for the electrical therapy signal; and

a processor carried within the housing and operatively coupled to the pulse generator, the processor being programmed with instructions that, when executed;

receive an input corresponding to an available voltage from the battery;

identify a pulse width of an electrical signal based on a correlation between pulse widths and signal delivery amplitudes; and

direct the pulse generator to deliver an electrical therapy signal at the identified pulse width value using a voltage within a margin of the available voltage.
