1. A method of wireless communication between a base station and at least one user equipment comprising the steps of:

  • transmitting a control message on an enhanced physical downlink control channel from the base station to the at least one user equipment using a demodulation reference signal antenna port;

    transmitting a second message indicated by the control message from the base station to the at least one user equipment;

    receiving the second message at the at least one user equipment;

    determining at the at least one user equipment whether the second message was correctly received; and

    transmitting an ACK/NAK signal on an ACK/NAK resource determined from the enhanced physical downlink control channel from the at least one user equipment to the base station indicating whether the second message was correctly received by the at least one user equipment, wherein the ACK/NAK signal further includes partitioning a physical uplink control channel into a legacy portion when the user equipment is configured to receive downlink control information on the legacy physical downlink control channel and an enhanced portion wherein the user equipment is configured to receive downlink control information on the enhanced physical downlink control channel and to use physical uplink control channel format 1a or 1b for determining ACK/NAK resource as;

    nPUCCH(1)=nindex+NPUCCH(1)+g(NPUCCH, e(1))where;

    nindex is the respective lowest indexed physical resource block or lowest indexed control channel element;

    NPUCCH(1) is the cell-specific offset; and

    g(NPUCCH, e(1)) is a function of a user equipment specific extended offset parameter.
