Geo-reference based positioning of a mobile device
First Claim
1. A method of determining a location of a mobile device, comprising:
- detecting, at the mobile device, at least one Radio Frequency transmitter;
comparing an identifier associated with the at least one detected Radio Frequency transmitter with identifiers of a number of Radio Frequency transmitters located within a geographical area, global locations associated with the identifiers having been decoded from information received at the mobile device prior to detection of the at least one Radio Frequency transmitter at the mobile device, the information comprising a global location of a single one of nodes of a grid structure defined by a set of geometrically similar polygonal shapes representing geographically bounded Geocoded Vector Signature (GVS) tags that lie within a GVS region and an indexing procedure for determining the global locations of others of the nodes of the grid structure, ones of the identifiers being associated with ones of the nodes; and
determining the location of the mobile device within the geographical area by identifying a match between the identifier associated with the at least one detected Radio Frequency transmitter and one of the identifiers of the number of Radio Frequency transmitters associated with one of the GVS tags,wherein the identifiers of the number of Radio Frequency transmitters are reduced versions of corresponding Radio Frequency transmitter addresses; and
determining the location of the mobile device comprises returning the location of a centre of one of the geometrically similar polygonal shapes of the grid structure when the identifier matches one of the reduced versions of the Radio Frequency transmitter addresses.

Abstract
A method of determining a location of a mobile device includes: detecting, at the mobile device, at least one Radio Frequency transmitter; receiving information associated with a number of Radio Frequency transmitters located within a geographical, area, the number of Radio Frequency transmitters being a subset of all Radio Frequency transmitters located within the geographical area, the information being decodable to provide global locations and identifiers of the number of Radio Frequency transmitters; comparing an identifier associated with the at least one detected Radio Frequency transmitter with the global locations and identifiers of the number of Radio Frequency transmitters; and determining the location of the mobile device within the geographical area; wherein the information is received in a reduced format.

13. A mobile device comprising:
-
a wireless communication system for detecting at least one Radio Frequency transmitter; a processor in communication with the wireless communication system to; receive information associated with a number of Radio Frequency transmitters located within a geographical area, and decode the information prior to detection of the at least one Radio Frequency transmitter, the information comprising a global location of a single one of nodes of a grid structure defined by a set of geometrically similar polygonal shapes representing geographically bounded Geocoded Vector Signature (GVS) tags that lie within a GVS region and an indexing procedure for determining the global locations of others of the nodes of the grid structure, ones of the identifiers being associated with ones of the nodes; and when the at least one Radio Frequency transmitter is detected, compare an identifier associated with the at least one Radio Frequency transmitter with identifiers of the number of Radio Frequency transmitters and determine the location of the mobile device within the geographical area by identifying a match between the identifier associated with the at least one detected Radio Frequency transmitter and one of the identifiers of the number of Radio Frequency transmitters associated with one of the GVS tags, wherein the identifiers are reduced versions of the Radio Frequency transmitter addresses of ones of the number of Radio Frequency transmitters; and determining the location of the mobile device comprises returning the location of a centre of one of the geometrically similar polygonal shapes of the grid structure when the identifier matches one of the reduced versions of the Radio Frequency transmitter addresses. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16)
