Abstract

A device includes a connection receiving power from a power source under normal conditions and circuitry configured to determine, based on an input from the connection, when the power from the power source is absent; output, when the power source is absent, a test signal at the connection; and generate a detection signal based on current flow generated following the output of the test signal, wherein the detection signal indicates a position of a switch connecting the circuitry to the connection and the generated detection signal indicates the switch is closed when the current flow is above a threshold. The circuitry is configured such that when the power from the power source is absent, the switch is closed, and plural devices are connected on the supply side of the switch, the plurality of devices on the supply side appear as a substantially open circuit to the test signal.

Claims

1. A device comprising:

a main power connection configured to receive power from a main power source under normal conditions; and

circuitry configured to

determine, based on an input from the main power connection, when the power from the main power source is absent;

output, based on the main power source being absent, a test signal at the main power connection such that, when one or more devices are connected on a load side of a switch connecting the main power connection to the main power source, the one or more devices appear as a substantially open circuit to the test signal due to a rectifier included in each device of the one or more devices; and

generate a switch state detection signal based on current flow generated as a result of the output of the test signal, the switch state detection signal indicating a position of the switch, and wherein the circuitry is configured to generate the switch state detection signal to indicate the switch is closed based on the current flow being above a threshold.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the test signal is set at a level such that, when power from the main power source is absent and the switch is closed, a collection of devices on a supply side of the switch appear as a substantially closed circuit to the test signal.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the test signal is set at a DC voltage of less than 3V.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the circuitry is further configured to determine whether an incompatible load is connected on the load side of the switch.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein the circuitry is configured to output a fault signal in response to detecting the incompatible load.

6. The device of claim 4, wherein the circuitry is configured to determine whether the incompatible load is connected to the load side of the switch based on a measurement of current flow from the main power connection through the incompatible load.

7. The device of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of diodes connected between the main power connection and the circuitry, wherein a voltage drop across the plurality of diodes is set based on the test signal voltage.

The device of claim 1, wherein the circuitry is further configured to maintain the plurality of devices connected on the load side of the switch as a substantially open circuit to the test signal by including a plurality of diodes connected in a serial manner between the main power connection and circuitry.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein at least one device of the plurality of devices connected on the load side of the switch is a light bulb.

10. A method of detecting a position of a switch during a failure of a main power source, the method comprising:

determining, by circuitry connected to the switch, when power from the main power source is absent;

outputting, by the circuitry, based on the main power being absent, a test signal at a main power connection such that, when one or more devices are connected on a load side of the switch connecting the main power connection to the main power source, the one or more devices appear as a substantially open circuit to the test signal due to a rectifier included in each device of the one or more devices; and

generating, by the circuitry, a switch state detection signal based on current flow generated as a result of the output of the test signal, wherein the generated switch state detection signal indicates the switch is closed when the current flow is greater than a predetermined threshold.

11. A device comprising:

a main power connection configured to receive power from a main power source under normal conditions;

a battery;

a first lighting circuit including one or more lights, wherein the first lighting circuit is configured to be powered by the main power source when power from the main power source is available and to be powered from the battery when power from the main power source is absent and a switch that connects the main power source with the device is closed; and

circuitry configured to

determine, based on an input from the switch, when the power from the main power source is absent;

output, based on the main power source being absent, a test signal at the main power connection such that, when a second lighting circuit is connected on a load side of the switch, the second lighting circuit appears as a substantially open circuit to the test signal due to a rectifier included in each light of one or more lights of the second lighting circuit;

generate a switch state detection signal based on current flow generated as a result of the output of the test signal; and

control power provided by the battery to the first lighting circuit including the one or more lights based on the switch state detection signal and the determination of whether power from the main power source is absent, wherein the circuitry is configured to generate the switch state detection signal to indicate the switch is closed when the current flow is above a predetermined threshold, and wherein the circuitry is configured to illuminate at least one of the one or more lights of the first lighting circuit when the power from the main power source is absent and the switch state detection signal indicates the switch is closed.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein the test signal is set at a level such that, when power from the main power source is absent and the switch is closed, a collection of devices on a supply side of the switch appear as a substantially closed circuit to the test signal.

13. The device of claim 11, wherein each of the one or more lights of the second lighting circuit are one of a light emitting diode (LED) and a compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb.

14. The device of claim 11, wherein the circuitry is further configured to determine whether an incompatible load is connected on the load side of the switch.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein the circuitry is configured to output a fault signal in response to detecting the incompatible load.

16. The device of claim 14, wherein the circuitry is configured to determine whether the incompatible load is connected to the load side of the switch based on a measurement of current flow from the main power connection through the incompatible load.

17. The device of claim 11, further comprising a plurality of diodes connected between the main power connection and the circuitry, wherein a voltage drop across the plurality of diodes is set based on the test signal voltage.

18. The device of claim 11, wherein the circuitry is further configured to:

measure a temperature of the battery, and

control, when the main power source is available and the switch is closed, power to the first lighting circuit based on the measured battery temperature.

19. The device of claim 18, wherein the circuitry includes a thermal servo configured to reduce power to the first lighting circuit in order to keep the temperature of the battery below a predetermined threshold.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the circuitry includes a ground-referenced bi-directional switch that implements a dimming technique to keep the temperature of the battery below the predetermined threshold.

21. The device of claim 11, wherein the circuitry is further configured to:

determine the battery voltage, and

generate, based on the determined battery voltage, a control signal that maintains the at least one of the first lights of the lightning circuit at a constant brightness when the battery voltage changes.

The device of claim 21, wherein the circuitry generates the control signal with a battery-voltage dependent duty cycle such that the one or more lights of the first lighting circuit are pulse-width modulated to maintain a predetermined average current level through the one or more lights of the first lighting circuit.

23. The device of claim 11, wherein the circuitry is further configured to:

measure a temperature of the battery, and

control a charging operation of the battery based on the measured battery temperature.

24. The device of claim 11, wherein the second lighting circuit is configured such that the plurality of lights may be one of a fully powered light, a partially powered light, and a powered in part light.

25. The device of claim 11, further comprising;

a base housing the circuitry and configured to receive power from the main power connection.
