Abstract

A computer-implemented method for updating a web user interface on a client device is provided. A router back-boned to the Internet communicates with the client device web-user interface data defined in markup language to dynamically update the web-user interface on the client device. The router contains no logic regarding the web-user interface running on the client device. The client device has a browser server for dynamically updating the web-user interface through downloading and caching the data from the router. The browser server on the client device has (i) a user interface model of the web-user interface running on the client device defined in Javascript, and (ii) a JavaScript Runtime Engine for dynamically converting the downloaded and/or cached web-user interface markup language data into JavaScript objects. The web-user interface is dynamically updated by combining steps (i) and (ii).

Claims

1. A method for providing subscribed data to application software on a client device over a wide area computer network, comprising:

configuring in a server resident on the wide area network (a) for receiving from the client device (i) a request for subscribed data, and (ii) a request for publishing subscribed data;

(b) for retrieving the subscribed data, and (c) for sending the subscribed data to the client device;

receiving over the wide area computer network the request for subscribed data from the application software on the client device, and extracting from the request identification information identifying the client device;

retrieving the subscribed data;

embedding in the subscribed data instructions for the client device to format the data for handling by an executable object model that is to be executed by a real time execution engine on the client device, wherein the executable object model provides an update to a user interface in the client device upon execution based on the formatted data;

based on the identification information, retrieving from a subscription list information for processing the subscribed data to be sent to the client device; and

sending the processed subscribed data to the client device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising embedded in the subscribed data instructions executable by the application software to create the executable object model.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising including in the subscribed data an update to the application software.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the application software is provided by download from the server to be installed in the client device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the embedded instructions comprise an interpretation module for interpreting the subscribed data sent from the server.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the executable object model renders the subscribed data in conjunction with custom device attributes of the client device, the subscribed data being requested from the server by the application software using queries that incorporate the custom device attributes.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the device attributes comprise display attributes to of the client device.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the application software interacts with an information and presence service running on the server.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the application software includes a template and a script library for creating query applications for requesting the subscribed data.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the template comprises a HTML template.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the script library comprises javascript objects.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the instructions embedded in the application software implement the user interface which is updated by the client device in the course of processing the subscribed data received from the server.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the update to the user interface displays responses to one or more queries in the request for subscribed data.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the request for subscribed data comprises requests for data provided by a plurality of data sources and wherein the update to the user interface displays responses to one or more queries embedded in the request for subscribed data.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the subscribed data set conditions for the update to the user interface.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the condition pertain to a maximum number of the times the subscribed data is to be updated.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the conditions pertain to an attribute associated with the subscribed data.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the attribute relates to an elapsed time since the subscribed data is available.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the attribute identifies subscribers to which the subscribed data is intended.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the attribute specifies a time when the subscribed data expires.

21. The method of claim 15, wherein the conditions are specified in one or more queries received from the client device.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein the application software comprises a web browser.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein the application software accesses system resources on the client device.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the system resources include a persistent storage capability.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein the system resources include a file system on the client device.

26. The method of claim 23, wherein the system resources include system level input and output capabilities.

27. The method of claim 1, further comprising configuring the server for receiving a subscription request to the subscribed data from the client device and creating a subscription to the subscribed data upon receiving the subscription request.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the subscribed data pertains to a selected topic.

29. The method of claim 27, wherein creating the subscription comprises adding to the subscription list the identification information of the client device and associated routing information.

30. The method as in claim 29, wherein adding to the subscription list comprises activating an on-message mechanism which directs an incoming event to the client device.

31. The method of claim 29, further comprising embedding instructions in the subscribed data to enable the client device to send an update to the routing information of the client device.

32. The method of claim 1, further comprising embedding instructions in the subscribed data to enable the client device to send a request to cancel a subscription.

33. The method of claim 1, further comprising embedding instructions in the subscribed data to cause the client device to send the request for publishing subscribed data at predetermined time intervals.

34. The method of claim 1, wherein the request for the subscribed data limits the subscribed data to that which is relevant to a predetermined time interval.

35. The method of claim 1, wherein the server limits the number of times the subscribed data is provided.

36. The method of claim 1, wherein the client device is a mobile device on a wireless mobile having access to the wide area through an edge server, and wherein the subscribed data is sent to the client device using an event-based communication protocol.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein the embedded instructions include instructions for listening for an arrival of an event corresponding to the subscribed data according to the event-based communication protocol.

38. The method of claim 1, wherein the update to the user interface sends the subscribed data to a presentation mechanism for presenting data in the client device.

39. The method of claim 1, wherein the embedded instructions are javascript objects embedded in HTML or XML statements.

40. The method of claim 1, further comprises, in response to a request for publishing subscribed data, receiving the data to be published;

and providing the data to be published as the subscribed data.

41. The method of claim 1, wherein the application software functions as a server embedded in a browser running on the client device.

42. The method of claim 9, wherein a query application is created on the client device by the application software for generating in queries in the request for subscribed data, the query application being created as a dynamic application.

43. The method of claim 42, wherein the query application downloads and caches documents in the query application.

44. The method of claim 42, wherein the application software enables downloading and caching query applications.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein the application software interprets the subscribed data to update the downloaded query applications.

46. The method of claim 43, wherein the application software updates the query application by populating the template using the downloaded and cached documents.

47. The method of claim 1, wherein execution of the executable object model updates the instructions embedded in the application software.
