Abstract

In one embodiment of the present invention there is provided a method of providing protection during a procedure performed in the vasculature using an open loop filter device comprising two elongate support members positioned to form at least one crossover location between adjacent open loops of the device. The method may also include placing the open loop device down stream of a location in the vasculature performing a procedure to treat the vasculature in proximity to the location; and capturing debris released during the procedure in a material capture structure suspended between the elongate support members and across the vessel. Additionally, there can be a step of maintaining the open loop filter device downstream of the location along the wall of the vasculature while permitting movement along the wall of the vasculature of the two elongate support members adjacent the material capture structure.

Claims

1. A method of providing protection during a procedure performed in the vasculature using an open loop filter device comprising two elongate support members positioned to form at least one crossover location between adjacent open loops of the device, the method comprising:

placing the open loop device down stream of a location in the vasculature;

performing a procedure to treat the vasculature in proximity to the location;

capturing debris released during the procedure in a material capture structure suspended between the elongate support members and across the vessel, wherein after the placing step the material capture structure lies in a planar or nearly planar configuration between the elongate support members; and

maintaining the open loop filter device downstream of the location along the wall of the vasculature while permitting movement along the wall of the vasculature of the two elongate support members adjacent the material capture structure.

2. The method according to claim 1 further comprising:

maintaining a connection to the device wherein the connection extends outside of the vasculature.

3. The method according to claim 1 further comprising:

removing the debris captured in the material capture structure.

4. The method according to claim 1 further comprising:

treating the debris captured in the material capture structure.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

maintaining the debris captured in the material capture structure by drawing together the two elongate support members to close off the material capture structure.

6. The method according to claim 1 wherein the location in the vasculature is in a vein.

7. The method according to claim 1 wherein the location in the vasculature is in an artery.

8. The method according to claim 1 wherein performing a procedure to treat the vasculature in proximity to the location comprises using the open loop device to perform a portion of the procedure.

9. The method according to claim 2 further comprising:

using the connection maintained to the open loop device as a guide wire.

10. The method according to claim 1 wherein the planar or nearly planar relationship with the elongate support members places the material capture structure transverse to the flow within the vessel.

11. The method according to claim 1 wherein the vessel is a vein and wherein the at least one crossover location has a height relative to a wall of the vessel, wherein the height of the at least one crossover location increases as the vein expands.

12. The method according to claim 1 wherein the vessel is a vein and wherein the at least one crossover location has a height relative to a wall of the vessel, wherein the height of the at least one crossover location decreases as the vein contracts.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein the height increases by sliding the elongate support members relative to each other.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the height decreases by sliding the elongate support members relative to each other.

15. The method according to claim 1, further comprising sliding one of the elongate support members relative to the other elongate support member at the at least one crossover location in response to the vessel movement.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the vessel movement is in response to the performing the procedure step.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein during the capturing debris released during the procedure step the material capture structure is suspended between the elongate support members of only one support loop.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein during the capturing debris released during the procedure step the material capture structure is completely to one side of the crossover.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein the two elongate support members each have a length and wherein after the placing the open loop filter step substantially all of the length of each of the two elongate support members and the at least one crossover is in contact with the wall of a vessel that is a vein.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein the two elongate support members each have a length and wherein after the placing the open loop filter step substantially all of the length of each of the two elongate support members and the at least one crossover is in contact with the wall of a vessel that is an artery.
