Abstract

A method and system for supporting MIMO technologies which can require the transport of multiple spatial streams on a traditional Distributed Antenna System (DAS). According to the invention, at one end of the DAS, each spatial stream is shifted in frequency to a pre-assigned band (such as a band at a frequency lower than the native frequency) that does not overlap the band assigned to other spatial streams (or the band of any other services being carried by the DAS). Each of the spatial streams can be combined and transmitted as a combined signal over a common coaxial cable. At the other “end” of the DAS, the different streams are shifted back to their original (overlapping) frequencies but retain their individual “identities” by being radiated through physically separate antenna elements.

Claims

1. A distributed antenna system for distributing MIMO signals for at least one MIMO service in a distributed antenna system (DAS), comprising:

a) at least one antenna unit operatively coupled to at least two MIMO antennas, wherein the at least one antenna unit is configured to;

receive native frequency MIMO uplink signals of at least one MIMO service; and

frequency shift the native frequency MIMO uplink signals into non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals;

b) a single coaxial cable used to carry the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals between the at least one antenna unit and a remote unit; and

c) the remote unit configured to receive the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals from the at least one antenna unit carried over the single coaxial cable;

the at least one antenna unit further configured to distribute the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals over the single coaxial cable to the remote unit.

2. The distributed antenna system of claim 1, further comprising a radio interface unit configured to receive the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals from the remote unit.

3. The distributed antenna system of claim 2, wherein the radio interface unit is further configured to receive the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals from the remote unit as non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink optical signals.

The distributed antenna system of claim 3, wherein the radio interface unit further comprises a radio interface unit uplink converter configured to convert the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink optical signals into non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink electrical signals, and further comprising at least one fiber optic link for carrying the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink optical signals between the remote unit and the radio interface unit.

5. The distributed antenna system of claim 4, wherein the remote unit further comprises an uplink converter configured to convert the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink electrical signals to the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink optical signals.

6. The distributed antenna system of claim 2, wherein the radio interface unit further comprises at least two radio interface unit uplink frequency shifters configured to frequency shift the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals to the native frequency MIMO uplink signals.

The distributed antenna system of claim 6, wherein the at least two radio interface unit uplink frequency shifters are comprised of a first radio interface unit uplink frequency shifter configured to frequency shift a first non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal among the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals from a first non-overlapping frequency to a first native frequency MIMO uplink signal.

The distributed antenna system of claim 7, wherein the at least two radio interface unit uplink frequency shifters are further comprised of a second radio interface unit uplink frequency shifter configured to frequency shift a second non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal among the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals from a second non-overlapping frequency to a second native frequency MIMO uplink signal.

The distributed antenna system of claim 6, wherein the at least two radio interface unit uplink frequency shifters are configured to frequency shift the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals having non-overlapping frequencies in a frequency range of 320 MHz to 520 MHz to the native frequency MIMO uplink signals.

10. The distributed antenna system of claim 2, wherein the radio interface unit further comprises a combiner configured to combine the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals received from a plurality of the remote units into combined non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals.

The distributed antenna system of claim 2, wherein the remote unit further comprises a combiner configured to combine the received non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals into combined non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals to be communicated over the single coaxial cable to the radio interface unit.

12. The distributed antenna system of claim 6, wherein the at least one antenna unit includes at least two antenna unit uplink frequency shifters configured to frequency shift the native frequency MIMO uplink signals to the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals.

The distributed antenna system of claim 12, wherein the at least two antenna unit uplink frequency shifters are comprised of a first antenna unit uplink frequency shifter configured to frequency shift a first native frequency MIMO uplink signal among the native frequency MIMO uplink signals to a first non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal.

The distributed antenna system of claim 13, wherein the at least two antenna unit uplink frequency shifters are further comprised of a second antenna unit uplink frequency shifter configured to frequency shift a second native frequency MIMO uplink signal among the native frequency MIMO uplink signals to a second non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal.

The distributed antenna system of claim 14, wherein the at least one antenna unit further comprises a first antenna unit uplink combiner configured to combine the first non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal and the second non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal into combined non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals.

The distributed antenna system of claim 14, wherein the at least one antenna unit is further configured to receive the first native frequency MIMO uplink signal from a first MIMO antenna among the at least two MIMO antennas, and receive the second native frequency MIMO uplink signal from a second MIMO antenna among the at least two MIMO antennas.

17. The distributed antenna system of claim 1, wherein the at least one MIMO service operates in a MIMO frequency domain division (FDD).

18. The distributed antenna system of claim 1, wherein the at least one antenna unit is comprised of a plurality of antenna units, and

wherein the remote unit is configured to receive the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals over dedicated single coaxial cables from the plurality of antenna units.

19. The distributed antenna system of claim 1, wherein the at least one MIMO service comprises at least one CDMA service, wherein the at least one CDMA service includes the native frequency MIMO uplink signals in the 1.9 GHz PCS band.

20. The distributed antenna system of claim 1, wherein the at least one MIMO service comprises a WiMAX service and a CDMA service.

21. A method of distributing MIMO signals for at least one MIMO service in a distributed antenna system (DAS), comprising:

receiving native frequency MIMO uplink signals for at least one MIMO service at at least two MIMO antennas operatively coupled to at least one antenna unit;

frequency shifting the native frequency MIMO uplink signals into non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals;

communicating the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals over a single coaxial cable from the at least one antenna unit to a remote unit; and

receiving the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals communicated over the single coaxial cable at the remote unit.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising receiving the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals in a radio interface unit from the remote unit.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising frequency shifting the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals to the native frequency MIMO uplink signals.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein frequency shifting the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals to the native frequency MIMO uplink signals comprises:

frequency shifting a first non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal among the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals from a first non-overlapping frequency to a first native frequency MIMO uplink signal.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein frequency shifting the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals to the native frequency MIMO uplink signals further comprises:

frequency shifting a second non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal among the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals from a second non-overlapping frequency to a second native frequency MIMO uplink signal.

26. The method of claim 22, further comprising combining the non-overlapping frequency MIMO downlink signals received from a plurality of the remote units into combined non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals.

27. The method of claim 22, further comprising combining the received non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals into combined non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals to be communicated over the single coaxial cable to the radio interface unit.

28. The method of claim 27, further comprising frequency shifting the received native frequency MIMO uplink signals to the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals.

29. The method of claim 28, further comprising combining the first non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal and the second non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal into combined non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals.

30. The method of claim 28, further comprising:

receiving the first native frequency MIMO uplink signal from a first MIMO antenna among the at least two MIMO antennas; and

receiving the second native frequency MIMO uplink signal from a second MIMO antenna among the at least two MIMO antennas.

31. The method of claim 27, wherein frequency shifting the received native frequency MIMO uplink signals to the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals comprises:

frequency shifting a first native frequency MIMO uplink signal among the native frequency MIMO uplink signals to a first non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal; and

frequency shifting a second native frequency MIMO uplink signal among the native frequency MIMO uplink signals to a second non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signal.

32. The method of claim 21, comprising receiving the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals from the remote unit as non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink optical signals.

33. The method of claim 32, further comprising converting the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink optical signals into non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink electrical signals.

34. The method of claim 33, further comprising carrying the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink optical signals between the remote unit and the radio interface unit over at least one fiber optic link.

35. The method of claim 33, further comprising converting the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink electrical signals to the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink optical signals.

36. The method of claim 21, wherein the at least one antenna unit is comprised of a plurality of antenna units, and

further comprising receiving the non-overlapping frequency MIMO uplink signals over dedicated single coaxial cables from the plurality of antenna units.
