1. A method comprising:

  • establishing a primary wireless communication link with an access point of a wireless LAN at a first device having a cross-layer implementation with a primary local wireless interface associated with a network agent and a secondary wireless interface associated with a network agent;

    determining if a second device is within a local wireless coverage area of the first device;

    establishing the direct secondary wireless communication link with the secondary local wireless interface between the first device and the second device when the second device is within the local wireless coverage area of the first device, wherein a cross-layer agent of the first device receives information from one of the primary local wireless interface network agent and the secondary wireless interface network agent and causes a protocol stack switch of the first device to facilitate establishing the direct secondary wireless communication link via a secondary local wireless interface transport layer of the secondary wireless interface; and

    transferring data between the first device and the second device over the secondary wireless communication link.
