1. A method of accessing bone marrow of a bone comprising:

  • inserting a penetrator, defined in part by an outer cannula and an inner trocar, into the bone and associated bone marrow by a handle rotating a drive shaft and an attached connector, the connector releasably attached to a hub that is attached to the outer cannula, the hub defining a flange with a maximum transverse dimension that is greater than a maximum transverse dimension of the connector, the flange configured to contact skin adjacent the bone when the penetrator is inserted into a patient'"'"'s bone, wherein the hub is attached to the outer cannula at least at a point along the flange;

    detaching the handle and connector from the hub while the outer cannula is disposed in the bone and associated bone marrow; and

    removing the trocar from the cannula to allow access to the bone marrow through the cannula,wherein the flange is in fixed relation to a first end of the outer cannula, the first end of the outer cannula configured to be inserted into the bone and bone marrow,wherein the first end of the outer cannula has a first plurality of cutting surfaces,wherein an end of the inner trocar proximate to the first end of the outer cannula comprises a second plurality of cutting surfaces,wherein the first plurality of cutting surfaces and the second plurality of cutting surfaces are configured to fit together to form a single drilling unit.
