1. A surgical instrument having a system for retaining buttress material, the surgical instrument comprising:

  • a jaw assembly including a first jaw and a second jaw, at least one of the first jaw or the second jaw defining staple pockets for retaining staples;

    a first buttress material having a central portion and a peripheral position including a peripheral perforation line separating the central portion from the peripheral portion, the peripheral portion being attached to a tissue facing surface of the first jaw, the central portion being separable from the peripheral portion after the staples are fired;

    a second buttress material having a central portion and a peripheral portion including a peripheral perforation line separating the central portion from the peripheral portion, the peripheral portion being attached to a tissue facing surface of the second jaw, the central portion being separable from the peripheral portion after the staples are fired;

    wherein the first buttress material and the second buttress material are preloaded on the respective first jaw and second jaw at the time of manufacture; and

    a first buttress retainer having an open center portion and being attached to the first jaw, the peripheral portion of the first buttress material being retained against the tissue facing surface of the first jaw by the first buttress retainer; and

    a second buttress retainer having an open center portion and being attached to the second jaw, the peripheral portion of the second buttress material being retained against the tissue facing surface of the second jaw by the second buttress retainer.
