1. A method of performing hemodialysis comprising:
- passing dialysis fluid from a dialyzer through, in any order, a carbon source, a urease source, and a combination unit comprising an electrodialysis (“
ED”
) component and an electrodeionization (“
EDI”
) component to produce a cleaned dialysis fluid, wherein the ED component and the EDI component are separate, and wherein the dialysis fluid is passed within the combination unit via a fluid path from the ED component to the separate EDI component; and
returning the cleaned dialysis fluid to the dialyzer.

Abstract
Systems and methods for hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis having integrated electrodialysis and electrodeionization capabilities are provided. In an embodiment, the dialysis system includes a carbon source, a urease source, an ED/EDI unit. The carbon source, urease source, and/or the ED/EDI unit can be in the form of removable cartridges.
