Abstract

A gas delivery device (1 or 101 or 201) having a substantially U-shaped nasal cavity component (3 or 103 or 203) that fits inside the patient'"'"'s nostril is in fluid communication with a tubular guidance-stabilization system (8 or 108) that extends from the nasal cavity component (3 or 103 or 203), across the patient'"'"'s cheek, and over the patient'"'"'s ear. The tubular guidance-stabilization system (8 or 108) has a flexible wire or flexible strap that is embedded (or otherwise inserted) within the wall (33 or 120 or 220) of the tubular guidance-stabilization system (8 or 108) for the purpose of supporting the integrity of the gas delivery device (1 or 101 or 201) in order to maintain the tubular nasal cavity component (3 or 103 or 203) in the patient'"'"'s nostril. A stabilization patch (17 or 18 or 118) further secures the tubular guidance-stabilization system (8 or 108) to the cheek and/or behind the ear of the patient.

Claims

1. A system for delivery of a gas to a patient, the system comprising:

a single tubular nasal cavity component comprising only two terminal ends, including one end for gas inlet and one end for gas outlet, the tubular nasal component configured for insertion into a nostril of a patient and adapted to maintain an inserted position without adhesive, the nasal cavity component sized and configured to supply an amount of gas required by the patient through a single gas flow path therein extending from the only one gas inlet to the only one gas outlet, the single tubular nasal cavity component comprising;

a first end portion having a first longitudinal axis along the single gas flow path and having a first end and a second end, the first end flared outward and configured for insertion into a nostril of a patient, such that when in use, gas flowing in the single gas path flow diverges upon exiting through the first end,

a bend portion extending along the single gas flow path and configured to receive gas at a gas inlet end thereof and configured to exit gas therefrom through a gas outlet end to the second end of the first end portion, and

a second end portion having an end extending from the gas inlet end of the bend portion so that the single gas flow path extends through the second end portion, and having a second longitudinal axis along the single gas flow path, the second longitudinal axis and the first longitudinal axis intersect at an angle of between 60 and 80°

; and

gas supply tubing attached to the second end portion of the tubular nasal cavity component, the gas supply tubing having a flexible wire inserted along a length thereof, the gas supply tubing having a length to extend from the second end of the nasal cavity component, across the cheek of the user, and over the ear of the user; and

whereby during use, the flexible wire maintains a configuration of the gas supply tubing for supporting secure placement of the nasal cavity component in a nostril of a user, and gas from the gas supply tubing flows along the single gas flow path in the nasal cavity component.

2. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 1, wherein the first end is flared outward in a curvature.

3. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 2, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises a soft pliable material.

4. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 2, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises a shape memory material.

5. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 2, further comprising a key for alignment of the gas supply line to the second end to facilitate coupling of the gas supply line to the second end.

6. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 2, further comprising a stabilization patch to affix the flexible tube to a cheek of a user.

7. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 1, further comprising a key for alignment of the gas supply line with the tubular nasal cavity component during coupling of the gas supply line to the second end portion.

8. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 1, further comprising a stabilization patch to affix the gas supply line to a cheek of a user.

9. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 1, wherein the first end is frusto conical in shape.

10. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 9, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises a soft pliable material.

11. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 9, wherein the tubular nasal cavity component comprises a shape memory material.

12. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 9, further comprising a key for alignment of the gas supply line with the to the second end to facilitate coupling of the gas supply line to the second end.

13. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 12, further comprising a stabilization patch to affix the flexible tube to a cheek of a user.

14. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 1, further comprising circumferentially extending ribs on an outer surface of the first end portion.

15. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 1, further comprising internal longitudinally extending ribs.

16. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 1 wherein, when in use, the nasal cavity component reduces a risk of backflow of supplied gas or escape of the supplied gas outside a nostril of a user.

17. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 1, wherein when in use, a shape of the nasal cavity component promotes a nasal cavity reservoir of gas that is available for a next breath of a user.

18. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 1, wherein the gas supply tubing is configured to maintain the nasal cavity component in a nostril of a user.

19. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 1, wherein the gas supply tubing is configured to conform to a contour of a face and head of a user.

20. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 1 further comprising a clip which affixes the gas supply tubing to clothing of a user.

21. A system for delivery of a gas to a patient, the system comprising:

a single tubular nasal cavity component comprising only two terminal ends, including one gas inlet end and one gas outlet end, the nasal cavity component configured for insertion into and stabilization in a nostril of a patient without an adhesive, the nasal cavity component sized and configured to supply an amount of gas required by the patient, the single tubular nasal cavity component having a single gas flow path therein extending from the only one gas inlet end to the only one gas outlet end, the nasal component comprising;

a first end portion having a first longitudinal axis extending along a first portion of the single gas flow path, and having a frustoconical outward flaring first end having a divergence angle of from 3 to 30° and

configured for insertion into a nostril of a patient and for diverging flow of gas in the first portion of the single gas flow path,

a bend portion in fluid communication with the first end portion and extending the first portion of the single gas flow path into a bent gas flow portion therein, and

a second end portion in fluid communication with the bend portion and extending the single gas flow path, the single gas flow path having a second longitudinal axis in the second end portion, the second longitudinal axis and the first longitudinal axis of the single gas flow path intersecting at an angle in a range of from about 60°

to about 80°

; and

a tubular guidance stabilization system including a flexible tube operatively coupled to another end of the second end portion to supply gas to the tubular nasal cavity component, the flexible tube having a flexible wire embedded therein and extending along a length of the flexible tube;

wherein, when in use, the frustoconical outward flaring first end promotes diverging flow of gas exiting through the first end of the nasal cavity component into a nostril of a user; and

whereby during use, the flexible wire maintains the configuration of the flexible tube thereby maintaining the integrity and placement of the gas delivery device on the user, and gas from the flexible tube flows along the single gas flow path in the nasal cavity component.

22. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 21, wherein, when in use, the nasal cavity component reduces a risk of backflow of supplied gas or escape of the supplied gas outside a nostril of a user.

23. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 21, wherein, when in use, a shape of the nasal cavity component promotes a nasal cavity reservoir of gas that is available for a next breath of a user.

24. A system for delivery of a gas to a patient, the system comprising:

a single tubular nasal cavity component comprising only two terminal ends, including one gas inlet end and one gas outlet end, the nasal cavity component configured for insertion into and stabilization in a nostril of a patient without an adhesive, the nasal cavity component sized and configured to supply an amount of gas required by the patient through a single gas flow path extending from the only one gas inlet end to the only one gas outlet end, the single tubular nasal cavity component comprising;

a first end portion having a first longitudinal axis, and having a first end flaring outward in a curvature, the first end configured for insertion into a nostril of a patient, the first end having a cross sectional area for flow there through,

a bend portion in fluid communication with the first end portion, and

a second end portion in fluid communication with the bend portion and having a second longitudinal axis and a second cross sectional area for flow, the second longitudinal axis and the first longitudinal axis intersecting at an angle in a range of from about 60°

to about 80°

; and

gas supply tubing attached to the second end portion of the tubular nasal cavity component, the gas supply tubing having a flexible wire inserted along a length thereof, the gas supply tubing having a length to extend from a nostril of a user, across the cheek of the user, and over the ear of the user;

wherein, when in use, the outward flared first end promotes diverging flow of gas exiting through the first end of the nasal cavity component into a nostril of a user and,

whereby during use, the flexible wire maintains a configuration of the gas supply tubing thereby maintaining placement of the gas delivery device on the user, and gas from the gas supply tubing flows only along the single gas flow path of the nasal cavity component.

25. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 24 wherein, when in use, a shape of the nasal cavity component reduces a risk of backflow of supplied gas or escape of the gas outside a nostril of a user.

26. The system for delivery of a gas of claim 24, wherein, when in use, a shape of the nasal cavity component promotes a nasal cavity reservoir of gas that is available for a next breath of a user.
