Abstract

Green tea polyphenol compositions and methods of their use in treating herpes simplex virus (HSV) are provided. Representative green tea polyphenols include, but are not limited to (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate as well as green tea polyphenols with one on more ester-linked fatty acids.

Claims

1. A method for treating herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in a subject comprising administering to the subject a composition comprising 12.5 μ

M to 100 μ

M green tea polyphenol esterified with stearic or palmitic acid at the 4′

position and glycerin to treat at least one symptom of HSV infection.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises 0.001% to about 50% w/v of the green tea polyphenol esterified with stearic or palmitic acid at the 4′

position.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the green tea polyphenol is (−

)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate esterified at the 4′

position with stearic acid.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the subject is human.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition further comprises an anesthetic.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition is formulated for topical administration.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is formulated for oral administration.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the green tea polyphenol is selected from the group consisting of (−

)-epicatechin, (−

)-epigallocatechin, (−

)-epicatechin-3-gallate, enantiomers thereof, isomers thereof, and combinations thereof.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the HSV is HSV-1.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the green tea polyphenol is (−

)-epigallocatechin -3-gallate esterified at the 4′

position with palmitic acid.
