Abstract

An ambulance cot and cot loading and unloading system for an emergency vehicle comprises a cot having a head end, a base for mounting to a deck of an emergency vehicle, a track mounted for linear movement along said base, and an arm mounted for linear movement along said track from a retracted position to an extended position. The arm is and configured to engage the cot, and wherein when the track is extended along the base and the arm is extended along the track the arm is extended from the base in an extended position and is configured for lifting the cot and providing cantilevered support to the cot while in the extended position.

Claims

1. An ambulance and an ambulance cot loading and unloading system for loading a cot into said ambulance, said ambulance having a deck and a cargo opening, said ambulance and said ambulance cot loading and unloading system comprising:

a base mounted to said deck;

a track mounted for movement along said base from a retracted position to an extended position along said base; and

a trolley mounted for movement along said track from a retracted position to an extended position along said track, said trolley having an arm, said arm having a length and being extended outwardly from said cargo opening when said track and said trolley are both in their extended positions wherein said arm is extended sufficiently from said base and said ambulance for fully extending its length under the cot when positioned adjacent said opening and for providing cantilevered support to the cot while in said extended position.

2. The ambulance and the ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 1, wherein said trolley has a latch for engaging the cot.

3. The ambulance and the ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 2, wherein said trolley includes a loading and unloading apparatus-based controller, said loading and unloading apparatus-based controller being configured to actuate said latch.

The ambulance and the ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 1, further comprising a series of latches, one of said latches being adapted to lock said track to said base and another of said latches being adapted to lock said trolley to said track, and said latches being adapted to selectively disengage and engage to allow said trolley to move relative to said track while said track is locked to said base but to allow said track to be unlocked from said base and instead locked to said trolley so that said arm and said trolley move in unison along said base.

5. The ambulance and the ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 1, wherein said length of said arm is moved outside of said cargo opening when said trolley is moved to its fully deployed position.

6. The ambulance and the ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 1, wherein said arm is pivotally mounted at said trolley about a pivot axis, said pivot axis being moved outside of said cargo opening when said trolley is moved to its fully deployed position.

7. The ambulance and the ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 1, further comprising at least one indicator indicating the status of said ambulance cot loading and unloading system.

8. The ambulance and the ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 7, wherein said indicator comprises a power light.

9. The ambulance and the cot loading and unloading system according to claim 7, wherein said indicator comprises one or more LEDs.

10. The ambulance and the ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 1, further comprising an inductive charging coil at said trolley for inductively charging a battery on said trolley.

11. The ambulance and the ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 1, further comprising a trolley position sensor for detecting the position of said trolley relative to said track.

12. An ambulance cot loading and unloading system for loading or unloading a cot into an emergency vehicle, said ambulance cot loading and unloading system comprising:

a base for mounting to a deck of the emergency vehicle;

a track mounted for linear movement along said base;

a trolley mounted for movement along said track from a retracted position to an extended position along said track, said trolley having an arm, said arm having a length and for being extended outwardly from the emergency vehicle when said ambulance cot loading and unloading system is mounted in the emergency vehicle and said track and said trolley are both in their extended positions such that said arm is extended sufficiently from said base for fully extending its length under the cot and for providing cantilevered support to the cot while in said extended position.

13. The ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 12, wherein said trolley has a latch for engaging the cot.

14. The ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 13, wherein said trolley includes a loading and unloading apparatus-based controller, said loading and unloading apparatus-based controller being configured to actuate said latch.

The ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 12, further comprising a series of latches, one of said latches being adapted to lock said track to said base and another of said latches being adapted to lock said trolley to said track, and said latches being adapted to selectively disengage and engage to allow said trolley to move relative to said track while said track is locked to said base but to allow said track to be unlocked from said base and instead locked to said trolley so that said arm and said trolley move in unison along said base.

16. The ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 12, said track having an end, wherein said arm is moved beyond the end of said track when said trolley is moved to its fully deployed position.

17. The ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 16, wherein said arm is pivotally mounted at said trolley about a pivot axis, and said pivot axis being moved beyond the end of said track when said trolley is moved to its fully deployed position.

18. The ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 12, further comprising at least one indicator indicating the status of the ambulance cot loading and unloading system.

19. The ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 12, further comprising (1) an inductive charging coil at said trolley for inductively charging a battery on said trolley or (2) a trolley position sensor for detecting the position of said trolley relative to said track.

20. The ambulance cot loading and unloading system according to claim 13, in combination with an ambulance, said ambulance having a deck and a cargo opening, and wherein said base is mounted to said deck.
