Golf club head or other ball striking device having multi-piece construction and method for manufacturing
First Claim
1. A wood-type golf club head comprising:
- a frame formed of at least one metallic material, the frame comprising;
a face having a striking surface configured for striking a ball, wherein the face has a variable thickness comprising a thickened portion proximate a center of the face; and
a back portion extending rearwardly from the face;
wherein the frame defines an opening on a bottom side of the frame;
a cover piece formed of a non-metallic material, wherein the cover piece is positioned within the opening and at least partially covers the opening, wherein the back portion and the cover piece combine to at least partially define a wood-type club head body extending rearwardly from the face and an internal cavity defined within the body, and wherein the cover piece forms a portion of a bottom of the head;
a threaded screw base connected to the body;
a weight member connected to the screw base, the weight member having threading and being connected to the screw base by the threading; and
a hole formed in the back portion of the frame and on the bottom side of the frame, the hole configured for receiving the weight member therethrough for connection to the screw base.

Abstract
A ball striking device has a head that includes a metal face configured for striking a ball, a rearwardly extending metal band, a top piece, and a bottom piece. The metal band has a first end extending from one side of the face, a second end extending from the opposite side of the face, and a rear portion extending between the first and second ends and defining at least a portion of the rear periphery of the head. The top piece and the bottom piece are non-metallic or substantially non-metallic. The top piece is connected to the top side of the metal band and forms at least a portion of a top side of the head, and the bottom piece is connected to the bottom side of the metal band and forms at least a portion of a bottom side of the head. The top piece and the bottom piece are separated by the metal band.
