1. An illumination system comprising:

  • a light emitting diode comprising;

    a substrate; and

    a light emitting region that is associated with the substrate, wherein a reference plane that projects away from the substrate sections the light emitting region into a first section disposed on a first side of the reference plane and a second section disposed on a second side of the reference plane; and

    an optic comprising a first surface forming a cavity that faces towards the light emitting diode and a second surface, opposite the cavity, that faces away from the light emitting diode,wherein the second surface comprises a first surface region disposed on the first side of the reference plane and a second surface region disposed on the second side of the reference plane, andwherein the second surface region is patterned with retroreflectors operative to reflect light across the reference plane and through the first surface region.
