Abstract

An enhanced broadcast data service with reports locations of traffic enforcement camera locations (e.g., red light cameras and speed cameras) to users. Traffic enforcement camera information is aggregated, verified (e.g., particularly as to traffic enforcement camera type) and stored (e.g., at a server). A broadcast signal comprising program channels and at least one data channel having traffic enforcement camera information is transmitted to a plurality of receivers. Receivers store at least a subset of the traffic enforcement camera information available from the server and synchronize to it using periodic transmitted updates. Receivers compare receiver location data with stored camera location data, and display or generate audible alerts when the receiver is within a selected geographic range of a traffic enforcement camera. Alerts can be filtered as to camera type. A alerts can employ different color camera icons superimposed on a screen map depending on camera type or whether the camera is newly added.

Claims

1. A method of providing traffic enforcement camera location data to a receiver comprising:

receiving at a receiver a broadcast signal comprising a plurality of program channels and at least one data channel, the receiver configured to receive the broadcast signal and demultiplex at least one selected program channel and the data channel therefrom, the data channel comprising traffic enforcement camera data that is periodically updated and is from a content provider that verifies the traffic enforcement camera data, the traffic enforcement camera data comprising at least camera location data and identification data indicating the type of camera selected from a plurality of different types of traffic enforcement cameras identified by the content provider;

storing in a memory device of the receiver at least a subset of the traffic enforcement camera data corresponding to a plurality of traffic enforcement cameras, including at least one speed camera;

demultiplexing the data channel from the received broadcast signal;

updating the traffic enforcement camera data stored in the memory device when the demultiplexed data channel comprises at least one of traffic enforcement camera data for a new traffic enforcement camera, data indicating deletion of the stored traffic enforcement camera data for an identified traffic enforcement camera, and data indicating edits to the stored traffic enforcement camera data for an identified traffic enforcement camera;

obtaining position data corresponding to the location of the receiver;

comparing the position data of the receiver with the camera location data stored in the memory device; and

annunciating selected traffic enforcement camera data from the memory device that corresponds to one or more traffic enforcement cameras located within a selected geographic range of the receiver and its corresponding type from among the plurality of different types of traffic enforcement cameras identified by the content provider.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising demultiplexing at least one of the program channels for playback to a user simultaneously with the annunciating.

3. A method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising dynamically varying the selected geographic range based on at least one of the position of the receiver, a user input, and designation of a region in which the receiver is located as urban or rural.

A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the position data corresponds to a plurality of receiver positions along a selected route, the annunciating comprising annunciating the traffic enforcement camera data from the memory device that corresponds to one or more traffic enforcement cameras located within a selected geographic range of the receiver at various ones of the receiver positions along the selected route.

A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the stored traffic enforcement camera data comprises sub-location data for at least one corresponding camera, the sub-location data indicating different traffic enforcement conditions depending on the direction of approach of a receiver to that camera location, the annunciating comprising generating an alert that varies depending on the direction of approach of the receiver to a camera location.

A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the receiver is connected to a user interface, and further comprising filtering the annunciating based on user inputs via the user interface such that the traffic enforcement camera data of only a selected one or more of the plurality of different types of the one or more traffic enforcement cameras located within a selected geographic range of the receiver is annunciated.

A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the receiver is connected to a vehicle radio having a display for displaying currently tuned radio station information, the annunciating comprising displaying alphanumeric information corresponding to the selected traffic enforcement camera data on the vehicle radio display.

8. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the receiver is connected to a positioning device having a display for displaying a geographic map, the annunciating comprising displaying the selected traffic enforcement camera data superimposed on the geographic map.

9. A method as claimed in claim 8, wherein the superimposed traffic enforcement camera data comprises icons for each of the one or more traffic enforcement cameras located within a selected geographic range of the receiver.

10. A method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the icons can be displayed in different colors for each of the respective types of traffic enforcement cameras.

11. A method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the icons can be displayed in a different color if they correspond to a traffic enforcement camera that has been added within a selected period of time.

A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the receiver is connected to a vehicle audio system comprising speakers, and the annunciating comprises generating audio messages to advise a receiver user when the vehicle is approaching one of the one or more traffic enforcement cameras located within a selected geographic range of the receiver.

A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein one of the one or more traffic enforcement cameras located within a selected geographic range of the receiver is a speed camera and the corresponding traffic enforcement camera data stored in the memory device comprises an enforced speed limit, the annunciating further comprises generating an audio message to advise the receiver user of the enforced speed limit.

A method as claimed in claim 13, further comprising comparing the current speed of the vehicle with the enforced speed limit and only generating the audio message regarding the enforced speed limit when the current vehicle speed is exceeding the enforced speed limit by a selected range of speeds.

A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the plurality of different types of traffic enforcement cameras comprises at least two of the group consisting of a speed camera, a red light camera, a speed on green, a high accident frequency location camera or monitoring device, and automatic license plate recognition device, and an average speed camera.

21. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the receiver is operated in a vehicle, and the traffic enforcement cameras are deployed along roadways and separately from the vehicle.

23. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the annunciating is based on the position data of the receiver and does not require determination of vehicle speed.

15. A broadcast system providing an enhanced data service for traffic enforcement camera location reporting, the broadcast system being configured to transmit a broadcast stream comprising a plurality of audio programming channels and at least one data channel comprising traffic enforcement camera location information indicating the locations of at least speed cameras, comprising:

an in-vehicle system comprising a processing device, a memory device and a broadcast receiver, the broadcast receiver being configured to receive the broadcast stream and demultiplex the data channel therefrom to obtain the traffic enforcement camera location information, the processing device being configured to store at least a subset of the demultiplexed traffic entorcement camera location information in an in-vehicle database in the memory device and to annunciate information relating to selected traffic enforcement camera locations retrieved from the in-vehicle database using a vehicle user interface system comprising at least one of a tuner, a display and at least one speaker provided in a vehicle, the traffic enforcement camera location information comprising at least camera location data and identification data indicating the type of camera selected from a plurality of different types of traffic enforcement cameras, the annunciated information comprising at least one of an audible alert via the speaker and a visual alert via the display of the location of at least one traffic enforcement camera and its corresponding type within a selected geographic range of the vehicle.

A broadcast system as claimed in claim 15, wherein the broadcast system further comprises a server configured to receive and store periodic updates to the traffic enforcement camera location information from a content provider that aggregates traffic enforcement camera location information for traffic enforcement cameras deployed in a selected coverage area, the periodic updates stored in the server being verified to correspond to speed related or other types of traffic enforcement cameras, the broadcast system being configured to periodically transmit the periodic updates on the data channel of the broadcast stream.

17. A broadcast system as claimed in claim 15, wherein the processing device is configured to filter the annunciated information based on type of traffic enforcement camera.

A broadcast system as claimed in claim 17, wherein the in-vehicle system comprises a user interface connected to the processing device, the processing device being configured to annunciate the traffic enforcement camera location information of only selected types of the one or more traffic enforcement cameras located within the selected geographic range based on user inputs via the user interface.

A broadcast system as claimed in claim 15, wherein the plurality of different types of traffic enforcement cameras comprises at least two of the group consisting of a speed camera, a red light camera, a speed on green, a high accident frequency location camera or monitoring device, and automatic license plate recognition device, and an average speed camera.

22. A broadcast system as claimed in claim 15, wherein the traffic enforcement cameras are deployed along roadways and separately from a vehicle corresponding to the in-vehicle system.

24. A broadcast system as claimed in claim 15, wherein the in-vehicle system is configured to annunciate the information relating to selected traffic enforcement camera locations based on position of the vehicle and does not require determination of vehicle speed.
