Abstract

An electrical energy harvesting device for harvesting electrical energy from a pulsed impact loading event. The device including: a piezoelectric element configured to be loaded and unloaded to a first load level by the pulsed impact loading event; and a first inductor coupled to the piezoelectric element configured to be loaded and unloaded to a second load level by the pulsed impact loading event, wherein the piezoelectric element and the first inductor together operate as a first inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit having a first resonance frequency and wherein the loading of the first inductor lags in time the loading of the piezoelectric element.

Claims

1. An electrical energy harvesting device for harvesting electrical energy from a pulsed impact loading event, the device comprising:

a piezoelectric element configured to be loaded and unloaded to a first load level by the pulsed impact loading event; and

a first inductor coupled to the piezoelectric element configured to be loaded and unloaded to a second load level by the pulsed impact loading event, wherein the piezoelectric element and the first inductor together operate as a first inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit having a first resonance frequency and wherein the loading of the first inductor lags in time the loading of the piezoelectric element.

2. The device of claim 1, comprising a first diode, wherein

a first terminal of the first inductor is coupled to a cathode of the first diode,

a first terminal of the piezoelectric element is coupled to an anode of the first diode, and

a second terminal of the first inductor is coupled to a second terminal of the piezoelectric element.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein a resonance period of the first inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit is between 0.5 to 1.5 times a maximum duration of the pulsed impact loading event.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein a resonance period of the first inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit is 0.75 times a maximum duration of the pulsed impact loading event.

The device of claim 1, comprising a second inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit coupled to the first inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit, the second inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit having a second resonance frequency, wherein a resonance period of the second inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit is longer than the resonance period of the first inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit.

6. The device of claim 5, the second inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit comprising:

a capacitor; and

a second inductor coupled in series with the capacitor.

7. The device of claim 1, comprising a second diode, wherein

an anode of the second diode is coupled to a first leg of the first inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit,

a first terminal of the second inductor is coupled to a cathode of the second diode,

a second terminal of the second inductor is coupled to a first terminal of the capacitor, and

a second terminal of the capacitor is coupled to a second leg of the first inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit.

8. The device of claim 7, comprising a third diode, wherein

an anode of the third diode is coupled to the second terminal of the capacitor, and

a cathode of the third diode is coupled to the first terminal of the second inductor.

9. The device of claim 2, comprising a second diode, wherein

an anode of the second diode is coupled to the second terminal of the first inductor and the second terminal of the piezoelectric element,

a first terminal of the second inductor is coupled to a cathode of the second diode,

a second terminal of the second inductor is coupled to a first terminal of the capacitor, and

a second terminal of the capacitor is coupled to the first terminal of the piezoelectric element and the anode of the first diode.

10. The device of claim 9, comprising a third diode, wherein

an anode of the third diode is coupled to the second terminal of the capacitor, and

a cathode of the third diode is coupled to the first terminal of the second inductor.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the pulsed impact loading event is at least one of a firing setback and an impact of the device.

12. The device of claim 1, comprising:

a storage capacitor;

a first diode; and

a second diode, wherein

a first terminal of the first inductor is coupled to a first terminal of the piezoelectric element,

a second terminal of the first inductor is coupled in series through the storage capacitor to an anode of the second diode, and

a cathode of the second diode is coupled to a second terminal of the piezoelectric element and an anode of the first diode.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein the first inductor and the storage capacitor together operate as a second inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit having a second resonance frequency that is at least twice as long as the pulsed impact loading event.

The device of claim 12, wherein during the pulsed impact loading event compressive loading of the piezoelectric element increases over time and the piezoelectric element is structured such that during the pulsed impact loading event the piezoelectric element structurally fails and the piezoelectric element after failure operates as one of a short or open across the first and second terminals of the piezoelectric element.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein the pulsed impact loading event is at least one of a firing setback and an impact of the device.

16. The device of claim 12, wherein a capacitance of the storage capacitor is larger than an equivalent capacitance of the piezoelectric element.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein the capacitance of the storage capacitor is at least 20 times larger than the equivalent capacitance of the piezoelectric element.

18. An electrical energy harvesting device for harvesting electrical energy from a single pulsed impact loading event during which compressive loading of a piezoelectric element increases over time and the piezoelectric element structurally fails during the pulsed impact loading event, the device comprising:

the piezoelectric element configured to be loaded and unloaded to a first load level by the pulsed impact loading event; and

a first inductor coupled to the piezoelectric element configured to be loaded and unloaded to a second load level by the pulsed impact loading event, wherein the piezoelectric element and the first inductor together operate as a first inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit having a first resonant frequency and wherein the loading of the first inductor lags in time the loading of the piezoelectric element.

19. The device of claim 18, comprising:

a storage capacitor;

a first diode; and

a second diode, wherein

a first terminal of the first inductor is coupled to a first terminal of the piezoelectric element,

a second terminal of the first inductor is coupled in series through the storage capacitor to an anode of the second diode, and

a cathode of the second diode is coupled to a second terminal of the piezoelectric element and an anode of the first diode.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the piezoelectric element after failure operates as one of a short or open across the first and second terminals of the piezoelectric element.

21. The device of claim 18, wherein the first inductor and the storage capacitor together operate as a second inductor/capacitor (LC) resonant circuit having a second resonance frequency that is at least twice as long as the pulsed impact loading event.

22. The device of claim 18, wherein the pulsed impact loading event is at least one of a firing setback and an impact of the device.

23. The device of claim 18, wherein a capacitance of the storage capacitor is larger than an equivalent capacitance of the piezoelectric element.

24. The device of claim 23, wherein the capacitance of the storage capacitor is at least 20 times larger than the equivalent capacitance of the piezoelectric element.
